This report by the senior engineer officer present makes an interesting read and I remember practically everything he talks about:-

Hello Peter. Twelve years ago, I joined on line with the group known as the VFR Flyers, who met through the VFR Forums. We flew in multiplayer several times a week, and spent many happy hours in each others company.

One of our number was Andrew Letchford, a very jolly chap with a lovely sense of humour. As we all got to know one another, Andrew mentioned that he had served in Aden with the Royal Marines. One of his tasks was that of a Forward Air Controller, directing Hunters onto the enemy in the Radfan mountains. Maybe he was one of those who directed you? The Hunter was his favourite aircraft, and we flew it on many occasions.

Sadly, after a long and difficult illness, Andrew passed away in December 2013. As a tribute, the Flyers flew six Hunters led in formation by a Shackleton, over Andrews home in Exemouth. Why the Shackleton? Andrew's brother Brian, of who he immensely proud, was Sqdn Ldr Brian Letchford, who died when the Shackleton he was piloting crashed.

It was not until after he died, that we discovered the truth about Lt.Col Andrew Campbell Letchford MBE RM, decorated for his bravery in action. My own abiding memory is of an unassuming guy, who was in fact, one hell of a guy!

Dennis.
