John Surtees

Post by Nigel H-J »

Just read that John Surtees who is the only man to have won the Grand Prix Championships on two and four wheels has passed away aged 83.

One of the last of the old school racers.

Rest in Peace John and condolences to his family.

Nigel.

Sad indeed, another icon of our youth. :(
Cheers, Mike.

Watched John many times as the "King of Brands" riding the Manx Norton. A very quiet unassuming young man, who never really looked like a motorcycle racer.

We got married on 11th June 1960, and went to the Isle of Man for our honeymoon. Little did my new young bride know that the TT was on that week. However, I gave her all the attention she craved during the night, and she dutifully watched the races during the day. Also, we flew BAE Viscount Heathrow to Ronaldsway. Our first taste of civilian airline flying.

John Surtees won the senior race on the MV, with his team mate John Hartle in second place. Surprisingly, the positions were reversed in the junior race. It was John's last TT before branching out into motor racing.

Many happy memories recalled.

Such a sad loss. He was a lovely, very private man. After the loss of his son in a freak racing accident he set up the Henry Surtees Foundation to provide help to people with head injuries, even though it must have daily reminded him of the loss of his son.

Goodwood will not be the same without his presence, the shot below was his last run in a car round the Revival track in September.
