Real flight simulator

Post by JohnD »

Had a ‘flight” in a real flight simulator today. It was a fathers day gift.
The flight was from Gatwick to Birmingham in real world weather. It included programming the FMC, taxying from the hold and take off, short use of the Autopilot and then manual handling with various engine throttle settings. The instrument approach for landing at Birmingham was very wet with a low cloud base.

For me it was a demanding and a very enjoyable experience.

The simulator was a B737-800. :hide:

The website of the company is www.virtualflightexperience.co.uk

There is a short video of my approach on their Facebook page - www.facebook.com/virtualflightexperience

I’ve booked another one for later in the year. Looking forward to it. Maybe a flight in better weather! :)

Regards

John

Nice one John

I've been fortunate enough to fly the C1K full-motion sim at Brize (avatar) and despite your brain knowing it's only a simulator.. as soon as it starts, it becomes very real indeed. Every bloke should have a go in one before he starts pushing up daisies

Good job John, It's addictive, I bet you'd like to have another session now wouldn't you?. lol

I've had 1 hour in the full motion 737-300 sim of Orion, 2 hours Canadair challenger, and about 200 hours in the Vanguard sim.

Dave, do you have any idea where the merch sim ended up?.

No Robbie.. 'fraid not. Bournemouth had one sim, I think there was another at East Fortune and we have the TCA sim (it's more a procedural/familiarisation sim.. nothing works AFAIK) at Brooklands. To the best of my knowledge, neither the Bournemouth or East Fortune sims were/are specifically 953C but I can ask :)

That must have been tremendous for you John, never know, one day I might have enough spare money to be able to do the same.

Incidentally, I remember reading once that when BEA had finished with the Viscount Simulator they went as far as offering it free to any-one who wanted it but sadly this did not happen and it was scrapped. :(

Just found it, if only we could travel back in time to save it!!

These sims were very old technology Nigel, you could fit the Vanguard sim in a small room BUT the computer installation needed to run it would need 2 more rooms, we had a technician on duty constantly just to keep it running, of course it's a crying shame as you say that someone didn't have the forethought to take them, after all I should think one Intel i7 could replace the 2 tons of old world main frame lol.

The One-Eleven team at Brooklands liberated a 1-11 sim from somewhere.. perhaps Filton. The last time I saw it, it was a pile (a BIG pile) of 'stuff' lying in the back of the Strat Chamber and I only knew it was a 1-11 sim because I was told that's what it was!! The intention was to rebuild it but getting someone to take it on plus somewhere for it to go once built was always going to be a problem. Where it is now gad only knows :dunno:

Sorry I was slow to respond, John. :$
They certainly gave you plenty to think about!
Very challenging.
Fancy putting you in the co-pilot's seat - the inhumanity.
Cheers, Mike.
