Re: New computer!
How are you getting on with the navigation Peter? or are you flying vfr? The AP is getting quite sorted now, and I can happily fly vor to vor with an ILS approach on all, but the big jets. Hope the next update in a day or so improves it further

Re: New computer!
Dale, I have taken to flying in direct lines on GPS...I started to do this in my re-visit to Operation Longtrek. I wanted to use the methods that we used then in 1953 to navigate with only a map on your lap as we had no navaids then. We had a map for each of the eleven legs with a straight line drawn from departure to destination. This is what happens in the new sim as you input those two points...Then in the sim the autopilot clutches onto that line all the way. In those days we had no GPS or any other navaids and we also had no autopilots to clutch onto the line on our map. In addition we also had to keep in our loose battle formation at 40000 feet. We also did not have to file any flight plans...we just went.
I have enjoyed in the sim doing the same thing...I setup the altitude and switch on and the relevant features of the autopilot that I am going to use but i don’t actually switch on the autopilot until i am airborne and the wheels and flaps retracted. When I then switch on the AP it turns onto course and with a slight persuasion climbs to cruise altitude. I like to keep the altitude low enough to see the scenery and just adjust it as high ground approaches. The Garmin 3000 shows quite clearly if I need to climb a bit or descend again after passing the high ground. I have no turning points on route, just the start and the finish...Just like our old concertenered strip maps all those years ago!
Yesterday I used the same method to fly 5 hours and 45mins from Southampton to Pico in the Azores...The weather was appalling and i had to do some altitude changes but my co-pilot made all the RT calls and I just set the altimeter each time it was given on frequency changes.
Here is a picture i took near the end of the route:-

Re: New computer!
I always thought it must be difficult to follow a route on a map in an aeroplane, especially at those attitudes Peter. I know you get a good heading with the compass, but if it gets a bit cloudy??
Great your enjoying the sim and reliving your experiences.

This little aeroplane is very pleasant to fly slow and low with a great view of the scenery!

Re: New computer!
I was in Germany for 4 years, 1952 till 1956...While I was there I visited this place several times and I have been searching for it in the sim. This shot is of a place that might be:-
https://share.icloud.com/photos/0-T9ysu ... vey_Tracey
But it was not what I was looking for...This is the nearest airfield to where I want to go:-
https://share.icloud.com/photos/0t7BcO4 ... vey_Tracey
What I am looking for is like this:-
https://share.icloud.com/photos/0nLzVvQ ... jjF48JXC7g
There were several of these and the inscription reads “Here Rest 5000 dead” the numbers varied and i visited them all and various monuments:-
https://share.icloud.com/photos/02GV6_q ... sctrjQPPJw
I thought that satellite images would see the large mass graves as long bumps in the ground...There was also a gigantic wooden cross there on my last visit but i know that has been taken down!
Well i will keep on looking....
I think I might have found it:-

Re: New computer!
I have found the site of Bergen Belsen and spent some time this morning taxiing round the area looking for any of the 14 mass graves...I didn’t find any but here are 7 pictures I took while looking around...Click on the tiny picture to get the larger and sharper one!
