I'm stumped too, almost a DC2 copy but rudder horn balance different as are the undercart legs. It looks as if it has the Jack Northrop wing design, but its not listed as being his. Bulged rocker blisters - possibly European influence?

Japan had a licence to build the DC 2, and based the subject on those plans, but made it smaller, so you were certainly on the trail!

Having found the nose, poor Den took a nose dive and mothballed himself for this one.

The identity was Armstrong Whitworth Ensign (AW 27)

Keith went further, asking about the engines. According to the cutaway index, this is the Tiger IX-engined variant, (MkI) without defining whether they were original Tiger IXs, or the revised 850HP Tiger IXCs. Unfortunately, these proved unreliable as well, resulting in the MkII being fitted with Wright Cyclones rated at 950HP. Unreliability continued, and their career ended with the survivors broken up in 1947.
Production was set back by the call to produce Whitley bombers, btw.
