Thanks, Mike. Now I can see the serial number, I realise how wrong I got it. I said it was a Mk.5 of No 410 (Cougar) Squadron RCAF but records show that serial 18539 was actually a Mk. 5 allocated to No 432 Sqaudron.

Oh, well.I promise to try harder next time!

Oh, now I see why I could not figure it out. I knew it was some variant of the CF-100, but the nose threw me off, it was much more blunt that the images I was able to find. Mike your obfuscation did its job and threw me off.

Summarising: My book has a section on the Mk4. That section has a two page cutaway, and at the foot was the image which I used. Here's the caption next to the image:

An initial search brought up the words shown above (earlier post), "confirming" Mk4.
Having looked further after Pete's post, I found this:

That screen shot includes many actual photos, clearly showing the same details as the drawn image, so, unless all those photos have been doctored, or the CAF site is wrong, (which won't be the case), I accept that the image is a Mk5.

Ice creams all round, and let's hope next week is less troublesome and upsetting.

30-03-26 results
A Siskin IIIA of 43 Squadron Tangmere, numbered J 8959, and wearing the C.O.'s pennant was spotted by
Brian (Bridon Bear), PeteP, AllanL and Mick (woody901).
Brian, Pete and Allan receive Diamond badges for their detail, whilst Mick Gets Gold for a little less detail.
Pete and Allan were pretty well tied on extra information, but Pete nominated Sqn Ldr R E Bain, who was apparently in charge from 15th December 1936 to 22nd October 1939. My searches tell me that during this period, 43 Squadron was operating Hawker Furies, then Hawker Hurricanes (MkI), whereas Allan's nomination of C N Lowe ran the show from 14th January 1928 12th November 1930, whilst the Squadron operated Siskin IIIAs.
Fine lines of demarcation, but unless someone has better information than I do, the Knows Art goes to Allan.

Oh, dear, how did I make such a silly error? I must have meen having a VERY senior moment! Anyway, here's some pictures from my Tangmere collection of the real CO, Sqn Ldr C N Lowe, MC DFC, a former England rugby international, in action.

And here he is, once again flying J8959, leading the famous No 43 Squadron "tied together' aerobatic team in 1930 which debuted to great acclaim at that year's Hendon airshow.

CN Lowe is seated centre with the dog and his shooting stick which he used to sit on at the edge of the Tarmac and watch the standard of flying. At the extreme right in the front row is Fg Off Eugene Esmond RAF who, 12 years as Lt Cdr Esmonde RN, would win a posthumous VC flying a Swordfish against the German navy's 'Channel Dash'.
