It wasn't airworthy though Chris

It had been in the Weston super Mare museum looking much tattier than this.

They appear to have cleaned off the mos and polished it up...........and then.....what a load of plonkers.

Had they left it the right way up it wpould be a pretty object in its' smart livery that compliments the natural ugliness of the type.

Art is suppose to convey a message.

In this case the artisit is saying "Look everyone I'm not only a great aritist but an even greater pratt."

Ahhh Art, so that's what it's called...

I wish i'd known that when, as a fearless young 17 year old, i'd placed my dad's brand new Escort upside down in the worlds biggest and most smelly ditch.

If he thought it a thing of beauty... I'd probably have got less of a hiding... :roll:

I think the ugliest thing about it, is the dust filter on the intake, not artistic at all

I think it is a waste, its on loan from the helicopter museum, and to quote them in flypast 'we wouldn't RISK one of our main collection'!!! :roll: It wasn't in great condition because they have a tendancy to buy stuff and leave it outside to rot

we are talking about the same group who for reasons known only to them swapped a wessex for the first production whirlwind on the basis that they would restore it (it was in restoreable condition) and then stripped all the serial numbers off it to hide its identity and sent it to colerne fire dump. By the time we found out all we could do was recover parts for our other Mk1 and chop off the cockpit for restoration at some point in the future.

(i'll admit that we are sending a har10 to a fire dump but only for recovery (non destructive) training and in exchange for a dragonfly which is of much more value to the collection, also the har10 was only bought for parts recovery anyway)

I don't see this as art. All it is is a beautiful wessex tured upside down for no reason. Where' the effort that the artist had to put in?

If a few more people (in the world, not here!) would be upfront about their opinions of this sort of "art" then maybe it would disappear.

Too much of the "emperor's new clothes" approach to art methinks.

I have recently been exposed to a lot of art since Mrs H is doing an A-Level.

Even some of the famous artists leave me wondering if everyone was so in awe of their work that they refused to criticise it.

Or maybe the junk which they intended to burn has ended up on gallery walls because they are now "early examples of xxxx's work". :think:

Anyway enough rant.

I agree,

Look at Monets "The Water Lillies" or a similar picture. It has been carefully considered an gradually built up layer by layer over a period of time. The wessex has just been flipped over in a couple of minutes.

It's not art. It's someone who thinks they're good at art but they're actually rubbish.

Since posting the above I have actually heard the matter was disscussed by the BAPC at the weekend. It seems the amount of money being paid is substantial and will help preservation of rotary winged aircraft, it is also insured very heavily. so whilst it may not be art, there is a benefit.
