Banned at Santa Monica

While Arnold took power as a Republican (he's a financial conservative and a social liberal for the most part, kinda like Juliani), the majority of Southern California (read LA, Santa Monica, Orange County, San Diego, ect) and the Bay Area (San Fran, Oakland, & Sacramento) are major havens for the liberals and they rule most of the California State Assembly and city governments.

Think of it this way - You used to have 99 airports in the Greater LA Basin in the 1950s. You now have 9, with 2 under serious threat of closure.

The only LA-basin airports that are still "airplane friendly" are Chino (on the outskirts) and Van Nuys (where people like Clay Lacy base their aircraft and is the second largest warbird base in California with Chino being #1).

There are 4 Jet Provosts and 2 Vixens based in California, at least one Jet Provost and Vixen is at Chino (owned by Steve Hinton and the Planes of Fame museum), so I'm sure they were over at SMO quite a bit as were a lot of those others listed as many are based at SMO or VNY.

As someone who lives in California I an assure you that Orange County and San Diego are NOT havens for liberals. I have relatives near the Orange County airport, a pretty conservative spot with some of the strongest noise restrictions in the area. If you have ever flown out of KSNA, on take off, they set the brake, go full throttle and when the engines get up to speed they release the brakes and take off as steeply as they can. Once they get beyond the boundary of the airport they throttle back and cruise over the neighborhoods. Once they get out over the ocean a few miles away they can climb normally.

In my experience NIMBY's are likely to be conservative than liberals, but both groups have there share.

Joe, I dont think it really matters what the political persuasion is, it just seems that wherever you are in the world, 90% of people who buy a house under an airport flightpath hate aircraft and aircraft noise. You'd think they might check the map first or notice them fly over while they're viewing the place but it seems they buy the places anyway and then whinge about hte aircraft :roll:

I used to hear this in Southampton where I used to live. Personally I'd just be sitting at my desk and hear something come past and either identify the noise and think "thats the Dash-8/146/ERJ/Trislander/737/whatever" or go and watch it fly past

Of all the aircraft that flew out of Southampton, the most noisy one was the little Trislander, ironically enough!

Ok well as usual I started something that I shouldnt have - the reason I sited Santa Monica is that it serves Malibu which is where 90% of the stars of stage and screen live -- and as far as as the statement Toby that they are mostly conservative -- sorry your wrong again

Nothing smaller than a G4 or G5 please.

Toby, sorry what set me off was the assertion by Chris that the area was a "major havens for the liberals" and that was reason for these restrictions. In my own defence I did say that both groups had there share of nimbys.
(nimby = Not In My Back Yard).

having lived in San Diego - anything south of OC is very conservative
The point I was making was as I said SMO serves the stars....and
well we wont go any further....

One of the nicest airports in SOCAL I have visited was Palomar just north of San Diego - lots to see - no real restrictions and strangely enough very open to aerosexuals like me and thee
