Look in the background.. that looks like a white comet to me. Any information on which it is and what it was doing there? :k:

That's the wingless 4B that was sat at Gatwick for years.
Don't know the full history off hand, but you can be pretty sure someone is typing it right now!

All I know is it was ex-DAN Air and there since the early eighties until my associate Mr "Trident Man" scrapped it along with Trident 3B, G-AWZX a year or two ago whilst working with some contractors.

You mean I've not been beaten to the full history yet!?

Just had a peek in my Ladybird book of Comets...

G-APMB Comet 4B s/n 06422
Delivered to BEA in 1959 named 'Walter Gale'.
It flew the first BEA jet service.
Did stints with Olympic, Channel & Dan-Air.
Last flight 1978 & was at Gatwick ever after.

It's a very involved book is this...
Flights made 19,185
Hours flown 33,454

Bought by Gatwick Handling in 1978 as a training aircraft.
Outer wings removed & painted white in 1982.

Blimey, it even says who painted it!!...
Dave Osbourne & Jim Terry.

Says it was used for towing training.

The DC10 in the foreground has also been reduced to tin cans. A damn shame too as DA was the better of the four 10's Airtours/My Travel operated. Still the cause of many a headache though during my time at Manchester.

Tom.
