Last night I turned off the PC but it did not shut down
It occasionally does that
After it had be frozen on the blue screen for about half hour I turned it off at the back
Nothing odd there
After a few miunutes I turned the switch back on and went to bed (same room)
Still quite normal.........for this sort of shut down
An hour or so later the PC started up on it's own
:k:

next time Garry
try holding the power button in (Press and hold)
on the front of the PC untill the machine turns off. usually about 5 sec or so
......and no need to wait so long....(waiting for blue screeen)it happens to me to some times if the system hangs up
during shut I just go ahead and holf the power button in
Question.... did you return System Restore back on?
It really is a good thing in XP.

OK Joe
I'll try that next time...but I have no idea how it could turn itself on.that's the mystery
As to system restore.the machine is under warrenty and if system restore is on and there is a software bug they basically read you the riot act syaing system restore brings back all the crap and bascically tell you to turn it off of they don't want to know

There are some settings in the BIOS that can enable the PC to switch itself on (wake on LAN for instance) but if it's only just started happening then it may be something like a faulty power switch or even the PSU.
I've just replaced a PSU in a PC that refused to shut down without restarting itself. I thought it was the power switch to be honest but I'm now informed that it has solved the problem.

I suppose realistically....if it jammed on shutdown it could have got it's knickers in a twist and set itself to do something
It sort of woke me up and in my half sleep I sort of wondered if what was happeneing was really happening, along with trying to remember which planet I was on
But sure enough it was still on this morning
I will have to keep an eye on it
Thanks CB

But since the motherboard is new, the wake-on-Lan might not have triggered before.
Take a look in the BIOS settings for all the wake up options. On one of my motherboards, I don't even understand all the possibilities but they are all switched off anyway. I had fax modem on one machine that occasionally woke up my wife's PC - result =

I remember the first time my modem caused the PC to boot by itself. I was sitting next to it at the time and I just starred at it thinking what the...ianhind wrote:But since the motherboard is new, the wake-on-Lan might not have triggered before.
