In Australia a couple crashed and it was because of the crashes the new tail configuration was made.

Hi Simon..
They were modified a couple of times during their life.. all to do with these 'odd' crashes.. the 86, 86A and finally 86B. The 86B was notably the one with the auxiliary fins and all 'A's' were thus modified. Final development was increased chord at the tips and higher gearing in the ailerons. 10 'B's' were produced to this spec

Some were two pilot with a wider nose
The earlier single pilot had a Rapide sort of look the the front.

Hi Garry..
Yup.. the early versions as operated by RAS were pilot and nav.. the nav sitting behind the pilot. YV and YZ were the only two (other than the prototype) constructed thus

The remainder were side-by-side CO and FO

Cheers Dave
Wasn't sure of the details
Surprising how that made the whole aeroplane look so very different

Hello mate..
Yep.. I quite agree. The first 3 looked like a Dragon/Rapide on steroids but the others took on a whole new identity :o Never been a big fan of the '86 as it happens even though some 60-odd (off the top of my head) were built. Always thought it looked rather odd and out of place.. a Brabazon of the day

The single cockpit aircraft looked ok but the twin made it look like a dolphin :o They did good service during the war though.. both the Japs and the Luftwaffe managed to shoot one down. Who else would shoot an unarmed aircraft down.. ok, maybe the Yanks
