Re: IL-18 Take off incident
Am I the only one that would have found the video more interesting had it actually taken off, without a hitch?
Don't think I've ever seen footage of an airborne Il-18, but I'm lead to believe that they're smokey beasts. Would be an impressive sight, indeed.

Re: IL-18 Take off incident
I just watched my AI Il-18 for the first time and that pumps out plenty of smoke, too, even on the ground!
Quite a nice model for AI

There's something very suspicious about that video.........
The fact that the fire engine arrives within moments. Having spent a fair bit of time in Africa (although admittedly not in Cabinda where this apparently was) I find that the most shocking thing about that video.
Yes, they are very smoky beasts. Used to see them around the Middle East quite a lot but getting fairly rare here now. Seem to have been replaced with 737-200s (so, not a lot less smoke
).

Re: IL-18 Take off incident
The fire was because he was trying to abort the takeoff roll and had the brakes floored. Pilot error all the way.

I'm wondering if there was a typo there??Tarasdad wrote:The fire was because he was trying to abort the takeoff roll and had the brakes floored. Pilot error all the way.
Braking heavily during a rejected t/o doesn't sound like pilot error to me.......

Yes heavy braking would be a good thingRJP wrote:Braking heavily during a rejected t/o doesn't sound like pilot error to me.......
I suspect the fire crew had just been using the fire engine as a bus to ferry airport workers to/from home - and they were just arriving back when the RTO happened
Cheers

Re: IL-18 Take off incident
Rejecting too late in the takeoff run is the error. End result, aircraft overshoots the runway, damages are increased. Pilot error.
