During my upgrade from Vista to W7, it warned me that Windows Mail would be replaced, but as I already had Live Mail to try it out I wasn't bothered. In the event it transerred all my accounts and contacts to Live Mail which worked straight away with no fiddling required.

Ok Live Mail is a seamless change and works fine
Ian did you have any issues with upgrading rather than clean install ?
Upgrade would suit me better as i have a huge number of programs that interlink with eachother and a clean install would drive me gaga!

Rick. I bought a family upgrade pack which gave me three licences to upgrade only so I didn't have the choice to do a clean install. But I've now completed the install on all three machines - so I'm getting quite experienced at it! When you insert the disk it does a compatibility check of all the progs and drivers on your hard drive and then gives you a report. For instance, on my laptop it asked me to cancel the install,switch off the security suite, download a couple of small W7 installation updates (less than IMb), uninstall a prog called eSobi (which came with the machine and I don't know what it was 
), do a reboot and then restart the installation.
The upgrade took three hours - most of which was the collection of my files and settings, which were stored somewhere whilst Windows was installed and then copied back into the correct place. Apart from at the beginning there was no requirement for any user input during the process and it rebooted a few times.
The result was a perfect install and all my settings, email accounts, old emails, favourites etc are in the right places. It found the network and established a HomeGroup and all I had to do was to play with the display.
Cyberbrat's machine wasn't quite so easy. It told him the eSet security wasn't compatible and that the PCI memory controller driver may need updating. We uninstalled eSet as it was nearly out of subscription anyway but ignored the memory message and took a chance. The installation went smoothly but 24 hours later it crashed to a blue screen with a message about the memory. I had to re-install from the recovery disk through Vista and W7 again
and then we updated the driver and since then no problems. So we were warned prior to going ahead.
The wife's laptop had no messages and no incompatibilities.
So the conclusion is that the installation will give you clear warning of possible problems and also give you solutions and will not go ahead with the installation if it can't do it properly. Please note that all 3 upgrades were from Vista Home Premium 32 bit to W7 Home Premium 32 bit. I don't think the XP upgrade is quite so simple. Hope that helps.

Upgrading to W7 from XP
Some info for those who might be considering upgrading from XP. There's a separate sheet in the W7 upgrade box specifically about this. Whilst Vista can be upgraded with all your progs, files and settings in situ this is NOT the case with XP.
The instructions are to save all your files and settings to an external hard drive using Easy Transfer. After installation of W7 you will have to RE-INSTALL ALL YOUR OLD PROGRAMS, then copy back your files and settings.
So it looks like you can only upgrade the OS and then do a clean install of your old stuff into W7.

Had W7 64bit installed fo a week now. Clean install on a new HD. Everything seems to be working well. Couple of minor progs not working, but nothing I can't live without.
No frame-rate improvement in FSX, but it is a lot smoother, and loads much quicker.
Overall, I'm a happy bunny.
