Christmas come early I say

Get your traffic file fingers ready Ben
An interesting subject is the old Oriskany. Watched a prog on the box about her a couple of weeks ago (on the Yesterday channel I think)

Ben..
Are you sure about that traffic file mate? I searched the expected track with the Nimrod for a pair of hours this morning and didn't find her. Eventually went back to Barrow and found 2 lots of Hermes/Glamorgan/Andromeda happily sailing around

Turned the time back to 0425z and saw Invincible alongside. As I approached, she disappeared and I never saw her again. Spent the rest of the best part of a couple more hours chasing the Hermes group up and down the coast with Prince of Wales and Graf Spee. I think I hit Hermes with a salvo off Graf Spee

It looked good watching from the tower at Walney.. like Navy Days

Hi Mate, Yep it should be there. To double check, set the sim time to 07:30and she will be just off the North East of IOM

Hello Mate
Okey doh

I just set the time to 30mins after departure and didn't see her once. That said.. ships are not that easy to see and with vis set to 20miles, I'm not helping myself

My theory was, how far can she get in 30mins at 25kts. A lot further than 12nm or she's wearing invisibility paint

Hi Dave,
The snag with Barrow is the bloody Sandbanks. When looking in Google Earth an Bing, its not clear where the channel is so it might be when shes setting off she's getting stuck and then disappearing. Just been doing a few checks and at 12:20 she is on the Westerly side of Arran steaming south. (Times are GMT, not BST)

Hello Mate
Yes.. I saw her trying to get out of Barrow previously and thought the skipper should be sacked for trying to get her out of where she was!

Then I saw her alongside (next time) and she disappeared but I've finally found her having taken off from the IoM and flying north at the prescribed time...
The picture is proof that I did actually find her and am not waffling

There is a problem with her paint. It looks nice enough but becomes invisible at anywhere above 1500ft with vis set to 20nm. In fact the only way I found her just was to fly at sea level where the effect isn't so noticeable and pick her silhouette up on the horizon.

I searched around in the Nimrod at between 200 and 400ft earlier and missed her completely. There really needs to be a way for AI shipping to show up on radar. FSCommander says it can but believe me, it can't

Hi mate,
Been doing some testing and I think the 24Hr repeat period was too tight so I've updated the original post and changed the route so as she goes up past the top of IOM, down the West side, past Anglesey and ends up just off Llanbedr at 14:30 or so, all well within the 24Hr window.
If you download that file and see how you get on, I've also changed her navigation a bit out of Barrow, so fingers crossed the new Captain makes a better job
If you want her anywhere else just shout

Re the hard to pick out, she is isn't she. To be fair, its probably more realistic in that respect as the others we have (on my system anyway) show up white from distance as though the are untextured which makes them a doodle to spot from a fair distance away

Dave,
If I'm right in thinking you've got the Buccaneer S1, the radar in that shows them. Bear in mind FSX won't actually create any AI traffic* until it's within about 70NM though so the longer range scales won't be much help.
*Doesn't apply to objects injected with AI Carriers which are persistent.

Hi Ben
We know the difficulties with the paint at first hand don't we. Remember the disagreement over what colour Fearless and Intrepid should be. My experience is that the real stuff shows dark on the shaded side and light on the lit side.. disproportionately so. Trying to match the exact colour in FS is a bugger and doesn't, to be honest, look as 'real' as it should if you stay close to the correct RGB. This is a conundrum that will continue
Skip.. yes, I do have the S1 mate.. had her out 'searching' this morning too

I'll have to try and get to grips with the onboard radar. Now you mention it, I remember you working in this very problem. I hope you don't think your hard work has been in vain

I only fly these things infrequently and for fun so don't usually have time for the nicities. Also.. I still find VC's terribly awkward when looking around using the POV so don't tend to go far from straight ahead

I'll seek out that radar but even when I've found Invinc'.. I won't be able to land on it

Must dig out the Iris Harrier. I found the orig and a couple of upgrades for it yesterday (though these are FS9 upgrades)
