Refueling

Post by TSR2 »

I've been nosing about other forums and it seems (within FSX anyway) it could be possible to do AAR. (The sport of kings) :)
No one seems to be able to explain how this would work in practice, but the theory is something similar to arrester hooks. Anyyone any thoughts and / or ideas on how this could work? tonka

hmmmm

Depends on the scripting as to what's possible. In theoty, the boom on a tanker could be associated with 'refueling' in the same way the refuelling points on the ground are. It should be practical enough to eneable some sort of 'lock' between aircraft via the 'refuelling' system - although quite how the dynamics will work is another matter!

The other issues that stand out are the fact that the refuelling boom needs to be physically 'there' as opposed to 'eye candy'.

And of course the fuel flow - a sudden drastic increase in weight while in the air???

I don't think it's quite that sudden Jim :) The Lago system had an area (perhaps 2.. never looked that hard) at the rear of the tanker that could be increased/decreased in size making it easier or more difficult to fuel. As long as you were close enough, stable enough for long enough.. you got fuel much the same as you do with a ground refuelling point (eg.. you have to be in the box with your brakes on.. not ALL of you.. just some). As for the probe.. I've taken fuel in a 1-11 mate so a probe isn't necessary. That bit is the illusion ;-) Think of it as a moving fuel box 'X' meters by 'X' meters and you're getting close :)

Not daft at all Jim ;-) The Lago software is particularly clever because it doesn't dump a tonne of fuel straight into your aircraft and if I could stay attached long enough.. I'd make a point of finding out what it DOES dump (or at least what sort of rate it transfers)

The Lago tankers are NEVER seen on the deck and you can't select them to fly as they're .bgl's.. literally flying gas pumps made to look like whichever tanker you select rather than the more traditional M$ offering. The system is also clever in that the tanker will always appear some 20nm away from your current position and will be flying either east or west (usually east when you first call). How the heck they do this I've no idea but there are folk out there clever enough to replicate it for FSX I'm sure and it'll only be a matter of time before it appears.

An alternative would be to have something similar to the system used in the old game TFX where the tanker was always in one position. A number of tankers could be added as carriers are added now.. not as good as the current Lago refueller but a viable workaround.. viable for someone who understands these things that is  The answers are out there ;-)

HI Dave

It would make an interesting multiplayer addition as well. Of course, the tanker pilot/loadmaster/fueller would have to make sure they delivered enough Motion Lotion  Imagine short filling halfway between Ascension and Mount Pleasant.... :dunno:

Just imagine the multiplayer fiasco that could cause.... :bandit:

Yes indeed! Baggies I'm in the tanker ;-)

I think MP is probably what Ben was thinking of when he made the suggestion/raised the question. It'd certainly add a new dimension to MP as does the driveable/landable carriers. Yet to try that out.. guess no one wants to be the carrier  Much easier to sit there with a screengrabber going 10 to the dozen than be captured making a fool of yourself trying to land on!

Sounds very interesting, and would certainly open up vast possibilities. I will stop now before I even *think* of any lunatic ones such as inverted refuelling for extra points.....

I got FSX a couple of weeks ago and haven't tried multi player yet, don't mind being the carrier if others want to have a go at landing on, what does MP in FSX involve?

Hi Rich,

MP is probably (in my view anyway) the single best thing about FSX. You'll see on the main page a tab marked multiplayer.. click on that then get yourself an account at Gamespy (have a password ready) and you're almost ready to go. The pages are quite intuitive (for a change) so setting up (or indeed, joining) a session is pretty straight forward. If it comes to fruition.. we'll help you along when the time comes ;-)
