Re: Courchevel
I was skiing just two valleys away from that place last week. Friends of mine did go there and had lunch next to the airport, I'll see if I can get some photos to post here as it is quite a place for a runway. There's an even smaller strip near Val Thorens that is used by Jodel ski-planes in good weather conditions.
Due to shortages and cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off.

Re: Courchevel
RobDob - it would be a Tyrolean Dash 7 I think. There is a fascinating article somewhere by the senior captain about the technique. Because the strip is so narrow, any assymetric thrust before rudder authority is obtained would be disastrous. So the PF opens up only the 2 inboard engines until 50 kts is past, nos 1 and 4 then being opened by PNF . V1 for this takeoff is 0 kts!!! - i.e. the moment the brakes are off, you are committedRobDob wrote:Saw a Dash8, I think it was, go out of there a few years ago when I was skiing..........frightening stuff!!!
