B757 and Atlantic Crossing?

Post by gevers1 »

Driving past Schiphol today on my way to work, I noticed an NWA aircraft taxiing towards the terminal. What was odd (I think) was that I'm sure it was a 757. It got me wondering if there are variants of the 757 that can do routes between say, New York and Amsterdam? The other thing I noted was that it had winglets like you get on the later generation 737's ...

There are Trans-Atlantic 757 flights

Can't think off hand who, but they do happen.

I often see a Continental 757 complete with turn-ups en route to EGCC every few days.

I know US Airways also uses their 757-200s here out of Philadelphia for hops to Gatwick (and I think Manchester occasionally, as well...)

US Airways is also in the process of fitting winglets to all of their 757s.

I flew Manchester to New York on an American Airways 757 way back in 99 so it's certainly capable of it.

I think the Bristol transatlantic service is a 757 as well (that's if it's still going).

I read about the LCY transatlantic service BA are planning on an A318. Now THAT'S stretching it - to the point where it can make it west but not east without refuelling!

Even BA are using 757's to start with!

A318's are the "Dedicate" ones, with additional longer range fuel tanks.

AFA used to use Boeing 727's on Transatlantic

It's no worse than when BOAC used Comets or when a lot of piston engines airliners flew the route.

I'm fairly sure I once flew the NW 757 London to Detroit and then a second one to LA. Remember thinking at the time 'can these things make it across in one go?!?!'. Fortunately got the Virgin 747 direct back as it had a much better in flight entertainment system!
