Now for something completely different..11 pics
Well I was stuck again and unable to continue with my projects for a vaiety of reasons
I was mooching arround through forums and got grabbed by a moment of madness.
I saw something and decided to model it.
It was simple in the respect of straight forward parts and would be a good exercise on using texturing to enhance 3D effect as well as something that could be a challenging animation trainer.
So I set about it on and off buiding it up and used a variety of photo textures drawn textures and comintations/mofification of photes and two weeks later had produced a model of one of the cranes at Chatham dockyard.
Trouble is at 34,000 vertices......well below the Superfreighter and I can't compile it. :@
Never mind.finshed it last Sunday as far as I could and have been back on proper modelling since then
So.for your amusement (a older, bigger boy told me to post them), this is the result
It is made f0r FS9 although quite what I'm supposed to do with it if I ever animate it I have no idea
Maybe just an obect d'Art.

Hi John
It not too dificult really as I made a few basic parts and was able to use copies of those in different sizes.
Only hard bit was trying to work off photos :-(

Garry,
truly awesome, and I thought modelling the cranes on the Ark was a bugger of a job!!
As a thought you may be able to get it to compile for FSX, I've read something by one of the ACES team that although a model has say 34,000 vertices the number in the compiled model is increased by mapping etc. I think this means where the vertices are on the edge of one area of mapping they're effectively counted twice by the compiler as they're on two bits of model. I'll try and find the original article as it made more sense than that last sentence! But to put it in perspective they had trouble exporting the Airtrike model which is probably the smallest plane in the game!

Hi Skip
That makes sens as the is a lot of texturing there
The article would be useful.if you can find it
The Superfreighter used tp compile at 49,000 but then I had to bring it down to compile
The ratio is variable
As of now
Superfreighter is 42839 compiling 66987.will compile
Crane 34404 compiliy 81596..won't compile
The crane is smaller.....yet bigger :brick: :brick:
TBH this has been taking a lot of the fun out of it

Re: Now for something completely different..11 pics
Just tried it after selecting all and clearing the textures
The points count on compile came down to 78895 or exactly 2700 less
Significatnt but not enough to acount for all the problem :-(

Garry
Here's the article http://blogs.technet.com/torgo3000/arch ... -good.aspx
It's really to do with FSX development, but I think to some extent it should be relevant to FS9, there's some other good stuff there for developers.
