Flying from Bournemouth in FSX

Post by speedbird591 »

Hi folks. I've just discovered that a colleague of mine is a closet flight simmer. He's been using it for a while but has been unaware of the whole add-on scene. I've shown him a bit of what is available but his favourite type of flying is outside of my experience. So we need some advice about how we can enhance his flight simming.

He is using FSX and flies light aircraft out of Bournemouth to destinations along the south coast. So we are looking for scenery enhancements for that part of the world. What do you recommend? Payware or freeware.

Now the bad news. He's another ex-Navy man  He got a helicopter licence in the forces and since leaving has done some fixed wing flying from Bournemouth. He's had a flight in a Hunter so would like to add that to his collection and I've suggested he wait for Dave Garwood's upcoming FSX model.

Any other advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Ian :)

Hi Ian,

If he's primarily a VFR chap (and I'm guessing he is with light a/c and helicopters he could do alot worse than Horizon's Generation X (Version 2) and the UK2000 stuff for the same area. Volume 1 of the GenX is all thats required, if he doesn't want to fly anywhere else :cpu: .

Now the bad news.. :o WTH (polite version)

I've just been sat on the back of Hermes (in FSX) while she sailed from Gib with Glamorgan as escort. Oh what fun this FSX thing can be.. as long as you leave the 'flying' component out of it

Ooops - sorry, Dave :worried: I thought that another sailor might tip the balance too far and we'll all have to fly Navy in future

We've probably got more Navy than RAF here, now. Us civil aviation types are definitely in a minority :-# Having said that, those warships that Skippy and Rick have done look fantastic and I can't say I'm not tempted. Not sure if I could get one off the ground, though ...

Ben - thanks for those ideas, I've had a look at the websites and they look absolutely perfect. I'll pass your ideas on.

Thanks

Ian

Hi Bill :)

It's a WIP at the mo. I gather there are tools out there that will convert .mdl's to a format useable by FSX thus enabling static scenery for FS9 to be used as AI in FSX. All a bit above me I'm afraid as despite the fact I've had FSX for yonks.. I'm only just starting to use it  The WIP Hermes I'm using at present is the same one DG converted for use in FS9 (the old Alpha model). Ben might know how the conversion was done and DG has just gone on a fortnights holiday. I am at their mercy

Hi,

I live in Dorchester and work in Bournemouth. I've also flown from Bournemouth (with the Bournemouth Flying Club) and do a lot of simming (in FSX) from Bournemouth along the south coast. I have a preference for helicopters (esp. Army and Navy) but also do some plank driving (esp. the Hunter!). There is a freeware Bournemouth Airport being developed out there.... Personally I have produced Hardy Monument (a good VRP on the way from Yeovilton to Portland) and Horton Tower (a good VRP between Bournemouth and Compton Abbas) as freeware scenery for FSX. Just take a look at FlightSim.com or AVSIM. I have more local stuff in the works, but time is always the contraint!

I would love to hear from any like-minded local simmers and I'd be more than happy to MP...

cheers

Hi Andy. Thanks for your response. I'll point my colleague to your post - it sounds as though his flying background is very similar to yours!

Cheers

I didn't want to jump the gun, but I see that Tony Adams has now completed his freeware scenery for Bournemouth Airport and has released it here:

http://www.tonys-peg.co.uk/

I'm off to try it now... Would be good to see your friend and any other locals in the pattern there (PM me if interested)... ;-)
