Caught a bit on the news on my way back from sunny Scunthorpe, and at that stage the figures were much lower.

Spanish news reports (as of now) just 25 survivors, very nasty indeed.
It seems that the tinder dry conditions we have here set the field alight, making it impossible for fire tenders to get to the aircraft before it was engulfed in flame. Spain is currently so dry, anything could set off a fire, let alone an MD82 with a burning engine (as reported to ATC), terrible accident.
