Berlin Gatow traffic

Post by Beaver Cleaver »

Hello all,
Does anybody know what charter airlines flew to Gatow airport in Berlin in the late 1950s and early 1960s? I did see a photo of a BEA jet sitting on the runway there, and I have seen on the net Skyways and Dan Air was there off and on. I know BEA was based at Tempelhof, but how often did they make a run to Gatow? I'm assuming these charters were only for troops, and possibly families.

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike

Welcome aboard

I can't give you answers without doing some research but I'm sure someone with answers will pop in shortly.

Charters are funny things. A while ago I tried to research a LLoyd International DC 4 flight into my local only to find that Lloyd International never visited.

Eventually I found out it was British United who passed the cherter to their subsidury Air Ferry of Manston who used a Lloyd DC 4 they had chartered for a short term in full Lloyd livery. I only found this as I had the date and found the flight listed as Air Ferry operated by G-ARWI.....the Lloyd machine.

So never be surprised to see something you don't expect or can't trace.

Autair and Eagle - With Vikings and Dc3s in the that time frame

Eagle trooped with the Dc4 and Dc6s so they may also be valid

In the mid 60s Autair also flew in with their Ambassadors and Heralds

As Garry says it will take some research

Ohhhh I did see shot of a Hermes in Gatow

not sur whose it would have been -- prehaps Airwork?

Hi all,

Thanks, Tom Gibson and I will be scheduling some AI charter traffic into Manfred Jahn's Gatow scenery. I sure will be nice to see a few Hermes and Vikings there, maybe a Britannia or a Viscount. I have been working with Tom over the years to create vintage sceneries, and I am about ready to release DDR 1963 East Germany. I did all the major airports for the entire country, some air taxi and supplemental traffic in a bagel, and painted up a few new AI to go with the package.

I also at the same time will release an update to the Tegel 1961 scenery, and a new Tempelhof 1962 scenery. So we thought it would also be nice to send some planes over to Gatow. I read in some blogs, that when Her Majesty flew to Berlin, it was Gatow she flew in and out of. What plane did she use as her personal plane in 1958 to 1962?

Hi Mike..

During the time you mention, the Queens Flight aircraft was a DH Heron (58 to 64) followed by a HS Andover CC2. Prior to the DH Heron, a Vickers Viking was used :)
