FS9 terrain mesh
Would any forum member care to recommend the best FS9 terrain mesh for:
a) UK and
b) Europe.
Perhaps there is one terrain mesh that would be suitable for both the UK and Europe.
My setup uses UK 2000 scenery in England and Scotflight scenery including Scotflight RAF collection in Scotland
I do have quite a few French addon airfields from avsim via valhalla.

Re: FS9 terrain mesh
I use the Just flight stuff, think it was originally done by getmapping. Its quite good but a little old. Not sure if there is a newer version for FS9 (There Might be) but it could be a good start. As for Europe, all I can think of is the Alps Mesh, its quite good and has quite a bit of detail. Its available on avsim and flightsim, if you search for alps mesh you'll come across it. Its also on the link below:

Hope this helps,

Re: FS9 terrain mesh
I have received a recommendation to buy/obtain Lago's Terramesh 1) England and Wales plus 2) Scotland plus Ireland.
I can find no trace of these products and lagoonline.com, th eold lago website seems to have closed. There is no mention of lago terramesh on the Simarket website.
Have these products been replaced? If so, what is the name of the replacement product which can b eused in FS9?

Hi James
There have been doubts about Lago for a while now. I don't think they've produced anything for FSX which doesn't bode well and as you say, other sites seem to have withdrawn their products. I may be able to help you out with Terramesh. Let me have a dig

Hi Dave
Thank you. That would be most welcome. There are other Lago products still for sale at Simarket.com but none of immediate interest to me.

Re: FS9 terrain mesh
Hi DG..
I've been trying to remember that link all evening
James..
I've found Terramesh but am not quite sure if it's 2002 or if it was ever properly updated for 2004. You're welcome to it either way. As for freeware FSGenesis.. this is excellent mesh and we are fortunate here in the UK in that the 'Demo' version IS the UK.. full version ;-) Terramesh is for Europe (which of course includes the UK) so you'd have to make sure Genesis sits above it. If you let Genesis self install, it will probably go into Scenery\World\Scenery so you'll lose control. Been a while since I've used Terramesh so I honestly can't remember how this installs

Re: FS9 terrain mesh
This mesh business ccame to the fore after I had bought the FS9 version of ScotflightRAF which consists of the three RAF airfield in Scotland: Kinloss, Lossiemouth and Leuchars. Forum users will know that i have recently been having arun of 'runtime 6025' CTDs and I found that I had remnants of JF' Roads and Rivers of Europe plus odd bits of FSGlobal 2005 left sometime (weeks) after I had used the built in delete programs for those addons. Removal of those bits and pieces sorted out the 'Kinloss problem of three breaks in the runway.' That also resulted in an increase in framerates when taking off from all three airfields.
Discussions with Scotflight during the last week led to the recommendation of the Lago Terramesh for Ireland and Scotland and also that mesh for England and Wales.
I have used Scotflight scenery since it was first produced so was keen to try the Terramesh.
Perhaps another forum user also has Scotflight scenery in FS9 and I would b einterested to know which mesh they use on their own computer setup(s).
Dave B: Yes I am interested in the Lago Terramesh and quite willing to try it out so back to you on that one.
Dave G: I am just off to the fsgenesis website to see what this demo mesh is like, thanks for your assistance.
I shall also get back to Scotflight on this topic.

Re: FS9 terrain mesh
Hi Hobby -
In my FS9.1, I have the Visual Flight/Getmapping VFR Photoscenery with the VFR Terrain mesh. That does England and Wales very nicely and reaches a little way into Scotland. In Scotland I have Scotflight with Andy Weir's mesh - you can find it at avsim, but Andy's name may still be spelt wrong (as Wier, not Weir). I have it on CD along with some of Andy's other mesh. In relation to a discussion in the VF forum, I tried the FS Genesis mesh, but I couldn't see any difference; it looked every bit as good as the Weir mesh, which is also 76m SRTM based.
There is a known problem with mesh in the British Isles - the default coastlines are not where the landmass really is in terms of Lat & Long, but the mesh is correctly placed. Things are OK at Dover, in relation to Calais, but as you move north and west there is a cumulative error. The VFR scenery has an accurately placed coastline, and Iain Gallacher made a great job of blending the VF coastline into his Scotflight where it overlaps. In default FS, the coastline is steadily displaced north of St Abbs, and many of the loch coastlines are set too high AMSL. Those factors combine to cause elevated lochs on huge embankments, often halfway up the side of a glen. Not Iain's fault, I hasten to add, and I believe he has an accurate coastline for FS9 Scotland in his very full pipeline, which will go a long way to fixing the FS error (which is actually a result of the 'flat earth' map modelling, which was used until FSX).
R&R of Europe can be something of a disaster in Scotflight. As well as putting roads in the sea (because the default land is in the wrong place) some people have found it submerged a lot of the Hebrides, apparently because it also modifies some coastlines.
When FS9 finds it has several meshes covering the same region, it will use the one with the highest resolution, so for me there is no point in installing all three parts of the Weir mesh. I accidentally did that once, and some time later found some very curious holes in the sea, off the south coast of England. Removing the Weir mesh for that region fixed the problem. The land was fine, because FS9 was using the VFR Terrain, but the Weir mesh covered more of the sea and there were some points missing, which produced the voids. I didn't check for that effect when I tried the FS Genesis mesh.
Hope this helps.
