Stig's identity revealed

I'm rather sceptical as to the accuracy of this article, but it apparantly reveals the identity of the BBC's Top Gear tame racing driver - The Stig.

TBH, I'm not quite sure why they have guarded his identity so much. I understand the whole "gag" of the Stig, but I think that "the Stig" can still be "the Stig" even if those who actually are big fans of the show know who he is outside the suit. He's simply another actor on another show playing yet another character, albeit a character that can drive the balls off of anything with wheels (and probably with tracks, or even anything that floats, and maybe anything with wings, he is "the Stig" afterall).

The point is - I think that the whole idea of protecting the Stig's identity is no longer a useful draw to the show. The content itself is more than enough to keep people interested and it doesn't mean they have to drop the idea just because the ardent fans know the face behind the mask.

I still want to know who Fat Stig is.... :@

Hi Chris,

to be honest a lot of people in the UK like a little mystery and comedy. Many people enjoy the sarcasm and dry wit of Jeremy Clarkson & co-presenters on the show.

Although I must admit Top Gear isn't about reviewing cars as much these days. Its usually focusing around the team trekking across a large country racing against each other, using different modes or methods, in the quickest time. Its entertaining to watch but, as someone at work said the other day, its not really a motoring programme anymore. More BBC comedy. :think:

Thats probably why they milk the Stig character so much and he also has a big fan base overhere. Mainly from kids I presume.

As for the fat stig. Its probably John Goodman.

Exactly, and this is the reason why myself and many others watch it, it's excellent comedy and a very enjoyable show. The old boring car review Top Gear is dead and hopefully will remain so for a long long time.

That sadly is very true, Top Gear is now very much entertainment for the boy racer.

To me, it is all about high performance out of pocket range vehicles......what we need is a good family orientated motoring programme but to some that would be no doubt too boring. Yes, there is Fifth Gear, but Top Gear itself needs to come down to the level of ordinary folk whilst not losing the humour.

Enough said.

I really don't understand this point, I've heard it bandied around a few times but I just can't really comprehend it. The old Top Gear has nothing in common with the new Top Gear other than the fact that they bear the same name and share some presenters. They are completely different shows now. No, it isn't a motoring show, it's a comedy show, plain and simple. "It's not really a motoring show any more." This is a good thing!

Incidentally that boy racer comment is rather bizarre, I don't count either myself or my better half as "boy racers", nor my friends, or family, almost all of whom agree that new Top Gear is infinitely better than a boring car review show that showcases plain, simple, depressing cars that you could, to be quite honest, read far better and more informative reviews about in a huge variety of locations.

If I'm brutally honest I think a just a touch of subconscious "back in my day" rose tinted glasses thinking is afoot, coupled with the distinctly British desire to moan about anything and everything.
