Post by Captain Pugwash »

Today was the 100th year of powered flight in canada. due to very bad weather the flight planed for today was cancelled, but yesterday under near perfect conditions, the replica took to the skies. here is a link to a test flight that took place earlier this year.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bc-0wR6V ... re=related.

Well now , I believe that this was not the first powered flight in the British Empire. New Zealand lays claim to this ( and in fact to the first powered flight of all!) . A British man, Richard William Pearse , 1977-1953 , is said to have made the first ever flight near Geraldine in the South Island , on 31st March 1903. Unlike the Wright brothers, however, his landing was not successful! Perhaps this is why the feat is not more widely known
