Skysim / TeamSDB Political Correctness?

Post by Ben Hartmann »

Just spotted this, the very last word in the sentence of the product description:

http://www.sky-sim.co.uk/catalog/produc ... ucts_id=69

Hmmm, i'm not sure whether this will cause any offence or not, nor have I met any black flightsimmers :dunno:
Just curious as to the context and the use of the word, and its historical significance to 617 Sqn.
Can someone kick me into touch please?

Confused

I think it's ebcause there is so much effort to try and pretend the dog's name ever existed they are just using it to point out the detail and accuracy of their product.

Thanks Garry :doho:

My initial thoughts were that if was going to be something along the lines of the long running Robertson's Golly saga

Thanks for clearing that up mate, makes sense now.

That's how I read it too Garry ;-) It needn't have been included on the 'sale' page but it was and both the fact that the dog existed with that name and the gravestone is there to commemorate him are historically correct however non-PC it may be. If the team have gone to that level of accuracy, I wonder if my pc will handle it :o No sign of any cones or Russian troop carriers

Guy Gibson's dog was called Nigger. What's the problem? It was of it's time.No sensitive person would use that name, which would cause so much offence, today. I read somewhere that in the new production of the 'Dam Busters', the dog will be renamed Digger.Perhaps the Lancaster should be renamed in order not to offend the good folk of Yorkshire!Give me strength :doho:

No different to 1950's documentries where a pic of a smiling man would have a posh over say "Now here's a gay looking chap"

Things are of there time.

I know of at least 4 regular contributors to the SOH and one at least to my own forum "The Old Hangar" who are black. Rewriting history should be avoided at all costs but conversely, good manners should be encouraged at all costs. Language and any unpleasant overtones associated with that language have to be judged in their present day context when merely part of a product description, but not so in an historical document where the context is date stamped and therefore immutable.
