Which Vanguard CAB, VC951.CAB or VC953.CAB ?

Post by johncantwell »

G'day again guys,

Can I just clarify please which is the latest/correct CAB file for the Vanguard?

The two CBFS Vanguard packs (which I think are the most current, downloaded only a couple of weeks ago) contain the VC951.CAB in the Vanguard's panel folder. There are no VC*.CAB files in the FS gauges folder.

I haven't installed the panel contained in the vc9panel.zip download (from Flightsim.com) but when looking inside the zip file today I noticed that it contains a VC953.CAB file, which the readme file says should be copied or cut to the main Gauges folder in FS2004.

Right now, having only installed the two CBFS Vanguard packs from this forum, I have no VC*.CAB files in the FS gauges folder as stated above. The Vanguard panel works perfectly, by the way.

I suspect that the VC951.CAB file is the latest/correct version but can Fraser, Dave or anyone else confirm this please?

Cheers
John/Australia

Hiya John

Glad to see you're sticking with it. As an aside, if you pop to Brooklands in the next few days.. you'll see APEP looking extremely clean as we've been scrubbing her off over the last couple of weeks. I appreciate it's rather far for you to travel just to see that

Okey doh.. to business. The very latest Vanguard panel and files is the one available here.. the VA pack. That contains the VC951.cab which superceeds the older VC953.cab. There is no need to put the cab file in your main gauges folder as FS is more than happy to read it from the panel folder ;-) If you have the 953.cab on your system.. you can safely delete it as it's not called for by the later panel.cfg file :)

Any probs.. just shout ;-)

Blimey! That was a quick response!

Thanks Dave, I'll stick with the 951 CAB. Yes, I'm really giving the delightful Vanguard a good work out, and really loving it. I've just about got it nailed, I reckon.

I'd seriously love to slip across to see APEP at Brooklands, but it is kinda out of my way. I lived in the UK (Surrey) for a couple of years in 1999/2000 but I won't be back anytime soon--that'll have to wait for retirement in 4-5 years. Please give my fondest greetings to the old girl.

Cheers mate
John

I thought some of the Vanguards were in fact 951s and the remainder were 953s so I would imagine that both CAB files should be present and the appropriate panel could then call the right CAB file. Gauge CAB files can go in the aircraft Panel folder instead of the FS9/Gauges folder but then they are not available to other aircraft except by aliasing.

Hi Peter..

Well.. strictly speaking, some of the aircraft are 951's and others are 953/953c's (notwithstanding Frasers 952 release). The update Fraser did for the VA pack didn't (strictly speaking) include a bonafide 951 panel.. it was an update of the previous panel. I'm not quite sure why he changed the cab number.. perhaps to differentiate between the two releases. :dunno: Whichever way you look at it.. the old release with the 953.cab was used for whichever Mk of Vanguard you wanted to fly be that 951 or 953 and this carries on with the latest panel and 951.cab ;-) The current 'up to date' panel uses the VC951.cab.. at least on my pc anyway

As Dave surmised, the cab number was changed to avoid confusion with the now very old original panel and people not deleting but overwriting the old one ;-)

As I understand it, while both versions of the real aeroplane were in service simultaneously, their panel layouts were identical. Some modifications and repositioning of instruments were made as a result of the accident involving G-APEE, extending across the fleet from 951 to 953. There are some differences to the air conditioning panel on the Merchantman.

cheers
