PC World Rant!
Argh im hugely fed up of having :@ on me! Ive had issues with my Laptop since it went faulty 5 weeks ago, first time it got sent back and took two weeks to "Fix"... They replaced everything in the Laptop! And if i had to pay it would have cost more than the Laptop was worth! Anyway, i had it for about an hour before the same problem happened again! So a lovely call to "The Tech Guys" arranged a pick up, they had it for three weeks, with no word from them even after chaising... So a nice call and email to the Customer services made things happen, so i recieved my replacement Laptop last Thursday, however its got three nice scraches on the screen, and two of these are prominent when in use! So another call to get them to replace this replacement! However they wont send a replacement with the currier to replace this one while he picks this one up, especially when the currier turned up at work and left empty handed as he didnt call me! So i spent another call explaining that im on a course next week in London which i will require a Laptop for coursework, they seem to be unable to help me and surgested i venture to the Local store to see if they have a equivilent spec'd laptop in store or they will refund me!
So im hugly considering the refund and taking my money elsewhere, however i did get £25 out of them as a complimentary for the issues with the second time the laptop was away...
Rant over...
Anyways, any one know of any good stores or websites i can get a good laptop from? Im looking at about £700 to spend and as large a display as possible...

Re: PC World Rant!
I think the problem nowadays is that laptops are mostly covered by return-to-base warranties. So it doesn't make much difference where you buy it, if it goes wrong it has to go back to a specialist repair company. My two month old Acer has just gone back to the repair company who handle all Acer's warranty repairs and they've had it for two weeks because they had to wait for a new part. At least I have a phone number to call if I miss it and want to talk about it to someone
I bought mine from Tesco Direct, but wherever I bought it from, if I'd experienced a problem it would have been the same repair procedure. Incidentally, Acer handle all warranty repairs directly exept for machines sold through PC World and Curry's - so they obviously do it themselves. But I couldn't say whether that's an advantage or not
I would say that the best people to buy almost anything electrical from are John Lewis as they have an unrivalled reputation for customer service. But you won't get a bargain!
EDIT: perhaps you might get a bargain, after all. I just had a look at their website and there's a quite well specced Acer knocked down to £599 from £699 with a two year warranty and free delivery included. http://www.johnlewis.com/230574617/Product.aspx

Firstly . Chris I hope it works out for you the best in everyway.
I was able to perform the warranty repair on my laptop when the HD went bad... they sent me a new one
placed a pending charge on my creditcard, when I recieved it I sent back the bad one and the pending charge was removed
once it was recieved at the repair center.
the reason
I told them I wouldn't let the store where Ibought it from touch it with a ten foot pole.
I won't mention names.... but when the tech I gave it to at first wouldn't listen to what I was telling him
and gave me the "hummph" like I didn't know wha I was talking about.... Plus. besides that I know of a few people who had this place
to have work done on their PC and it's like they get sucked into a cycle of having to go back.... can't prove anything ...
but I'll say this .. in all the years I've been using PC I've never been to a pc repair place as many times as they've been to this one
For The Same PC ......
besides ... this kid.. well I was slapping my ol commodore 64 up side down the other before he was Born!
.and yes it did work better after I slapped it!

Many years ago, when I didn't know any better, I went to PC World to get an OS upgrade from '98. ..'yeah, Millenium. it's great' the kid said, 'I use it myself, marvellous, no problems whatsoever........'
Needless to say I haven't been back since.

Re: PC World Rant!
I think that's a little unfair.. I liked Millenium
However, you're quite right about PCW. I've been stung twice (as if the first time wasn't enough) and as a consequence, would only buy from them now if they had what I wanted and absolutely NO ONE ELSE did.
My first experience with a 'real pc'.. a 486SX25 costing me £999 was a bad one. I knew nothing of pc's at the time and my brother in law gave me a list of questions to ask. If the answer was YES to all of them, then go ahead. I asked the questions.. the bloke said yes and I bought it. Needless to say, the system wasn't capable 2 of the major questions I'd asked which pee'd me off big time. I considered taking them to court but the CAB advised it would end up my word against theirs
Some years later.. there was the 17" TAXAN monitor! 'It only comes with a 12 month warranty sir so we'd advise you buy our 5 year extended warranty. I got the monitor home and opened the box and there inside was a 3 year warranty :o I went tearing back to the shop and guess what.. the salesman wasn't available. Didn't let go this time. Letters to both PCW and TAXAN resulting in PCW admitting I'd been wrongly sold the extended warranty. Took about a year mind you but I was offered either my money back or a refund and them giving me 2 years over Taxan's 3 to take it to 5 ;-)
They used to be good for cheap deals (faux pas on their behalf). Their pricing was so poor, you could pick up an item for only half the price if you searched the shelves long enough
This got em into hot water with Trading Standards (at the Lakeside shop) as a mate of mine who worked there said they had to close early one night and completely re-price their entire stock and with new stickers so that Mr Trading Standards could tell the job had been done
Boy.. he told me some stories of repairs I wouldn't like to repeat :o

Re: PC World Rant!
Hi guys, thanks for all the support and places... Ive druelled at Dell/Alienware laptops but are out of my price! Except some Dell laptops, ive also looked at pcspecialist.co.uk which has laptops that are good spec'd and also come without an O/S which is an added bonus as i have my own licence keys.
Anyway bit of progress today, the currier picked the laptop up this time, was shocked that the power plug and adaptor was going back!?! So i made a cursity call to tell them this but i just got a dumb **** who was like, "right and?"... Anyway im going into store tomorrow as i would like a laptop with me next week while im in London on a course, but if not its a case of online or shopping for one in London...
