Cycling: Texas Part Deux

The rain finally let up this weekend so it was time for Valerie and me to hit the open road once again.
'Churchill's British Restaurant and Pub'. Hmm. Never stepped foot in this place but when it went by the name 'Londoners Pub' an ex-pat Brit friend of mine would say in a grumbling voice "
That's not a pub!"

Maybe I'll check this place out some day.

Need a used car...see Burl.
Valerie using her new Google-Phone to find out where the road is that we're
supposed to be on. Needless to say I felt pretty stupid getting us on the wrong road.
Now we're moving!
Taking a quick break.
Valerie stopped giggling just long enough for me to take this pic.
Horses...I think.
The site of a WWII POW camp. The prisoners (mostly Rommel's boys from North Africa) were supposedly brought here because it was thought that the weather in this part of Texas was similar to the weather in north Africa.

A good time was had by all except for a few of the loyal Nazi prisoners who were killed by their fellow prisoners who weren't so keen on the Nazi party.

.
Until next time...
Brian

Thanks again for posting interesting photos Brian, the one of the WW11camp, have you visited it ? Guess there were many Germans only too pleased to find themselves POWs' and I often wonder how many really supported the war and Hitler but that is another subject.

Nigel.

Unfortunately the only thing remaining of the camp is the ground it was built upon.

I'd love to see the city build a replica of the barracks or something just to give the visitors a sense of what was there during the war. The camp was used as a migrant farm workers camp before (and briefly after) the war. The prisoners were actually allowed to work in the fields on the local farms...I guess they weren't considered much of a "flight risk".

I've read that some of the prisoners stayed here in Texas after the war. Considering what little was left of Germany I imagine Texas probably looked pretty nice to them.

Cheers Brian, pity about the camp being non-existent but like the prisoners there some of the German POWs over here I believe used to work on the farms, I suppose they must have been quite happy to be out of the war and reasonably well treated.
Quick quiz for you when you have some spare time. If you are feeling really brainy there are plenty more questions to fry your brain!

Thanks for posting those, Brian. It's great to have the opportunity to share what others are doing and seeing in their leisure time. Apart from flight simming, of course

I also appreciate seeing places and scenes which are very different to life in the UK. Does Valerie realise that she's become a pinup model on a flightsim site in the UK? Probably best you don't tell her!
As for pubs, I've been in 'English' pubs all over the world and never yet found one that's anything like an English pub! In fact there aren't many left in England now
Great photos - thanks again.
Ian

I got 8 out of 10 on the quiz, Nigel. Now if I could only figure out which 2 I missed.

Valerie does know that she's being shown on this forum, Ian.

Actually she has no problem with me posting pics of her....although it did take some coaxing to get her to pose in front of the church sign in Climax.

Maybe I'll visit the Churchill's pub in the not too distant future. Their "Banger in Bagguette" sounds kinda tasty.

Well I did get 9 out of 10 on a number of those quizzes though feel I should have done much better I'll put it down to the fact that age is causing the grey cells to fail!!
