What with the war in Afganistan (ww1, ww2 and a hundred others before and since) and now this will mankind never learn that peace has to be the answer?

The Israelis have ruled the Middle East from a position of unassailable power for many years. They have ignored several UN mandates and have been ruthless in their acquisition of land and persecution of the people who lived there.

The only way for their neighbours to live in peace with them is to hand over their land completely and follow a policy of appeasement. The threat of war is because Israel cannot tolerate a neighbour of equal strength who can defend its fellow Shias.

This has been building for many years and the UN are responsible for allowing it to happen. Appeasement nor any amount of hand wringing has ever preserved peace in the face of injustice. It didn't work against Hitler. If you look at the Middle East situation from the other side you can easily see Iran as the saviour who is willing to stand up to the bully. If Iran is emasculated there will be an unprecedented surge of anger, frustration and desperation across the area that could engulf us all for years to come.

But don't ask me to say whether it's better to destroy Iran's nuclear facility or to allow it to develop a weapon. I don't know. I just think it's all too late now. There will be a reckoning one way or another but what, when or how I can't imagine.

Too many years of appeasement of Israel's ruthless expansion and turning a blind eye. That will be the cause. It should have been stopped years ago.

It's too late now for talk of peace.

Ian

That is one cause. Another one is that the west hindered the installation of democracy in Iran a few decades ago when removing Mossadeq from power. What we wanted is the oil and only the shah would grant it to us. The current situation and the current regime are a logical result of what happened then.

Yesterday built today. Today will build tomorrow.

Cheers,

I hadn't realised quite how influential I was! I wrote my opinion last night from my head and my feelings - when that happens, I usually get shot down in flames in a very short space of time

This morning's leader in The Times actually agrees with much of what I said.

I knew I should have gone into politics  or perhaps journalism? Or maybe the leader writer is a closet CBFS member!

Which is how we got the name "Little Satan", and because we've got form many in Iran and the middle east will believe that Britain is organising the current unrest even if it seems laughable here. :((
