Best way to backup FSX?

Post by DogTailRed2 »

Hi,

I have to install Windows 7 on my XPS Vista system so I can run Server 2008, Virtual PC and various other things.
The best way would be a clean Windows 7 install. So what's the best way to backup FSX.
I was thinking of copying the whole directory structure. Then rebuilding my system, reinstalling FSX and then copying the whole directory structure back.
I will loose any add-ons that update the registry but I can redo these ones by reinstalling just those things.
So is what I'm attempting practical. Are there any other files not held under the FSX directory structure I need to backup.
Or is this a bad idea and should I just reinstall everything from install discs? Obviously this is the safest but slowest option.

Thanks,

Ted.

Only thing I'd add is to backup your My Documents/Flight Simulator X FIles directory or whatever it's called. Saved flights go there and a few other bits I think which might help.
I'm idly having thoughts along the same lines as at some point I'll have to migrate from the RC of Win7 to the real thing!

That's pretty much what I did when I upgraded to W7.
Backed up the original install, saved the flights & cfg files, installed a fresh copy in W7 then copied the relevant files from the backup into the new install. Didn't copy over the whole fsx.cfg, but instead copied selected parts from the backup copy.
Most payware aircraft needed re-installing, but the overall process was without problems.

Don't forget if your running FSX on Vista you MUST backup "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX" otherwise it will all go to cock :cpu:

If you used the 'V' key to take screenshots and want to back those up too they live in the 'My Documents\My Pictures' folder.
