Best way to backup FSX?

Hi,
I have to install Windows 7 on my XPS Vista system so I can run Server 2008, Virtual PC and various other things.
The best way would be a clean Windows 7 install. So what's the best way to backup FSX.
I was thinking of copying the whole directory structure. Then rebuilding my system, reinstalling FSX and then copying the whole directory structure back.
I will loose any add-ons that update the registry but I can redo these ones by reinstalling just those things.
So is what I'm attempting practical. Are there any other files not held under the FSX directory structure I need to backup.
Or is this a bad idea and should I just reinstall everything from install discs? Obviously this is the safest but slowest option.
Thanks,
Ted.
