The R1's are finished now

One retired two about to be AFAIK....all to be preserved :)

That's very sad news. There was no mention of this at Waddington last year, and makes one wonder what is wrong with the airframes when there appears to be no replacement ready.

Surely the Sentinel is replacing the Nimrod R1's?

Not according to the RAF's website anyway. The Sentinel seems to have a more tactical role, and the R1 a more, well, secret role!

The Sentinel take-off on Saturday morning at Waddington last year was amazing though! Straight up into a tight spiral - an extremely overpowered aircraft.

Don't think there will be much more in the way of the UK doing its own sneaky beaky function. We can't justify the costs I'd have thought. :dunno:

I forget where I read it but the article said the RAF will have to make do with a gap until the replacement comes on stream in a few years.

Doesn't sound a good way of doing things as either it's needed or not.......so why a gap??
