Free scenery tweaks for FSX

Post by DavidK »

Recently, I harvested some free scenery tweaks for FSX and am wondering whether anyone else uses (or has used) any of them, found any mutually incompatible, found FSX's animation adversely affected, etc:

ijt-autogen .......... simplified scenery graphics
TreeX .......... photorealistic trees
PicNic .......... more realistic grass
resautogentexfsx .......... simplified building graphics
taxitexturex .......... replacement taxiway graphics
rwtexfsx .......... replacement taxi/runway graphics

I've installed the first of these (ijt-autogen, which seems to've improved things) and am thinking about trying the others, but wonder if/when I'll mangle my FSX scenery as a result. So, advice appreciated.

Hi David..

I've only tried one of those (TreeX) which was a necessity prior to SP1 and 2. M$ populated the virtual world with more trees than you could shake a stick at and they weren't particularly frame friendly 8) TreeX was/is a very simple little program that you run (from an icon on your DT should you wish) which offers 3 different resolutions of trees and I think an option of tree types. Been a while since I've used it and I don't have it on this system but it certainly worked. Your originals are backed up so you can go back to them without fear of loss.. all at the click of a button :) Minimum autogen in FSX exceeds the maximum setting in FS9 so this was at one time a necessary little gem to have. However, and again.. I can't remember exactly, during the implementation of SP1 and or SP2, the default trees were tweaked and thus previously poor frame rates were improved in one (or two) foul strokes :)

If you think you might get better results from TreeX, don't be afraid to try it. You shouldn't lose anything and may like the revised sets better ;)

I was using PicNic and TreeX for a while but didn't bother to put them back in after my last HD reformat.

I am now using the free grass and airport parking textures from REX along with REX2.

This may not be a scenery tweak as such but will improve framerates.

Go to the autogen folder located in the FSX folder and rename the file that says default.

Change it to defaultold.

Launch FSX and see the improvement on framerates.

Tried this, and it seems to work a treat :agree:
Looking back at the Autogen folder, I expected to see a new 'Default.xml' file, but this was not the case.
Assuming that FSX is not accessing the 'defaultold.xml' file, what is happening?

I was a bit flumoxed at this Kevin. The only thing I could think of was that it was disabling the default autogen :dunno: Rename a file and the sim will either jump out and warn you it can't find it (if it's in the scenery.cfg) or not load it cause it can't be found. Less autogen will of course improve FR's. I'm still scratching my head

I found the defaultold.xml tweak on the net and on some Youtube videos.

I do recall somewhere it mentions that it uses the FS2004 autogen textures.

Thanks to all for the above.

I decided I'd try each tweak in turn (except TreeX, as I think the FScene4X I have has improved them -- still, may try it later) and started with austerdriver's simple renaming. I think it has made a difference here too, so wonder why FSX has it in the first place -- I haven't noticed any drop in the amount of scenery, although that might be because I don't have much switched on. The animation here still becomes jerky once I'm near or at big airports, but I guess that's unavoidable. (I mentioned a solution here and wondered whether it was possible and perhaps already done.)

I think I'll try PicNic next.

If you are tweaking FSX scenery have you had a look at these - http://www.flightsimtalk.com/2009/01/fs ... -free.html

Says they do not improve or decrease the performance, but do provide fixes.

That sounds very inviting -- thanks for the link. I'll download it while I'm out for tea, give it a try and report back. The weather here hasn't inspired me to try PicNic yet anyway.
