Flightradar24...

Post by petermcleland »

Does anyone else use this app like this...I zoomed to a suitable altitude so that the street names showed and then locked onto the Heathrow to Edinburgh Shuttle and followed it from 68 miles out of LHR all the way to EDI...It was remarkably smooth and a very expeditiously flown flight. This sequence of pictures that I took on my iPad may be of interest:-

I expect people will recognise the odd place along the way...Thanks for looking :fly:

Hello Peter,

I have FlightRadar24 as my home page but normally on the Map view so i can see whats about and any interesting aircraft flying near me as i have all the London Airport flights in and out around me, i do track aircraft but not like you with that view, that is very good,

I find it is an enjoyable site to watch and some great photos taken of high flying aircraft on the FR24 Forum.

Thanks for posting,

Roger.

Great pics, Peter . I do find it an interesting site, as I can identify what comes in through Wallasey, and it is surprising how many really long range overflights crossing UK airspace there are now e.g. JFK - Dubai , SFO - Dubai and the like . Also recently made more interesting by the expanded coverage of non-commercial flights

Hi Peter.I love using FR24 and have also the same view as your great pics.On your screenshots I recognize particularly the views of my old home town of Nottingham, clearly identifiable by the straight as a die water National water sports centre, and the late finals shot over Newbridge to r/w 06 at EGPH.Thanks for posting

Yep...when it's dark or cloudy I lock on in satellite and watch an aeroplane in this way, on the PC that is :)

Originally you couldn't lock on the 'plane and have the ground move but it gets improved all the time and now you can.

Two to choose from Peter.. Melton Airfield or Great Dalby Airfield. Looks like one of the many WWII fields :)

EDIT: A bit more.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Melton_Mowbray

Peter : just had a look at a half mill topo from 1987 ! ( Always knew this sort of stuff would come in useful one day ) . If the field was about 2 miles due south of the town , and about 8 miles due west of Cottesmore, then it was Melton Mowbray - marked as disused in 1987 , and I don't remember its being active in the 70s when I used to go into East Midlands a lot

According to that link Chris.. the RAF moved out in '64. I've no idea what happened to it in the interim *-) Ironically, it would have been active while Peter was still wearing RAF blue :)

It is obvious that part of the B6047 started life as RAF Melton Mowbray taxiway! It is amazing how the old outlines from the airfield can be seen in that shot.

Thanks for the info Dave and Chris :)
