Embarassed to be British
When I was a young man and a young soldier I would have done anything for the good of my country. I didn't like politicians, but I fought for them and argued their case with foreigners, even if I didn't think they were in the right, purely because they were my countrymen and I was proud of our nation's history and standing.
So what happened?
I have my own views, but to express them would be considered unacceptable.
Anyway, that's beside the point - it's things like the latest incredible story to appear in the national news that make me feel like the whole of the rest of the world must be laughing their cotton socks off at us, and end up wondering why I ever came back to this island that has quite simply lost the plot:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-27403902
It makes me feel the planet would be better off without us. Sadly, this seems like an almost daily topic these days. "Political correctness" being it's imo incorrect title.
Maybe it would be better to ditch the TV, internet, radio and newspapers and just live as a hermit.
Now there's an inviting thought!
PS - this was yesterday's, of course:

Re: Embarassed to be British
Hi JD
I'm sure that many here (me included) feel the same way mate. I'd seen the second link reported but not the first. I chose not to read the article having seen the title I can be angry enough without reading that sort of drivel!
Take a deep breath and ignore it

Re the DJ sacking, presumably the record came from the BBC's own extensive library.
re the first, another overeducated nitwit without an ounce (I can't spell hapeth ) of common sense allowed into a position of influence.
It is just as bad over here in the Democratic Peoples Socialist Republic of Canadastan, believe me you are not alone.
I find drinking helps

Hi,
I quote from the second article "The BBC took action after a listener heard the song - part of Mr Lowe's private record collection, broadcast on his self-produced Sunday night programme - and complained. Un qoute
" A" listener, what !! he only had one person tuned in! Cobblers, typical BBC,
The only reason the BBC did'nt sack Clarkson was the money he makes for them with his Top Gear show, if the show did'nt he would have gone as fast as that EE Lightning he used to have
Just my pennies!,
Roger.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

Re: Embarassed to be British
I couldn't tell you how many times I've heard 'The sun has got his hat on' over my 57 years on this planet and to be honest, the only words I've ever took any notice of have been the chorus.. The sun has got his hat on, hip hip hip horray, the sun has got his hat on and he's coming out to play. I've only now, after 'Binging' the title, actually found the lyrics and seen what this offensive word is! I'll guarantee that many of us are the same. For those unaware.. the word is the plural of the name of Guy Gibson's Labrador. Certainly not PC but come on

From this side of the Commonwealth, I'd go for ha'p'orth.
I agree entirely that both items are enough to make you cry.
BTW, don't anybody move into that hermit estate, the neighbours are awful. And anyway, we'd miss you here in our virtual society.
Re: Embarassed to be British
So we'll never here 'Oliver's Army' by Elvis Costello again. At least not on the BBC.
I believe the word in question is used in many popular films 'Pulp Fiction' for one. The Dambusters is another as Dave has already pointed out. Probably not so popular nowadays.
As the DJ has been offered his job back I suspect that he was the victim of an over zealous manager on the local radio station.

I could swear I saw a recent report on the Beeb, that the Dambusters US version gave the dog a different name.
Re: Embarassed to be British
I'm not embarrassed to be British . We have always had more than our fair share of nutters, and this is just another example of it
