If you have a payware prog whether it be a model, scenery or utility that you have tried.. tell us about it here.

X-plane 10

Post by J0hn »

Sorry for the use of foul language - but is it any good?

I hear conflicting reports. i.e. those not using it saying it's no good and those that do saying it's great

I tried the demo once, but got fed up with the interface before even getting into an aircraft, and ditched it.

Okay, after reading a lot of stuff in PC Pilot, I took the expensive plunge and went for it.

That was a week ago - I had one sort of flight in it. Well, an experience, in any case. It starts with videos etc and then I find I'm 'in' a Boeing 747. Not really 'in' it, because the view was external, and we were rolling off the threshold onto the infield before I even realised I was supposed to be controlling the thing!

Oh well. Back to the drawing board, as they say 8)

I have found lots of nice-looking freeware for it around the 'net, though, so hopefully if I get it working, there will be some nice pictures to show.

Don't hold your breath, mind. :worried:

I am very skeptical over the reports of its "accurate" flight modelling over that of FSX & P3D. I tried it (not V10 admittedly) and found the default a/c to be anything but realistic. I suppose it comes down to what you are familiar with simwise. Took me a while to like FSX over FS9 and am still getting used to P3D. For me XP interface is like the old DOS sims of the era of FS5. Another deterrent is the XP community, they have this High & Mighty collective look down their noses attitude towards the FSX user.

You get a lot of that in flight-simming. It's the same with people who fly Falcon 4 (and dare I say it, VATSIM UK types :hide: ).

Just egos and lack of education imho. It doesn't bother me - I like what I like and stuff what anyone else thinks. Opinions are always welcome, but pointless criticism is wasted.

I watched a recent X-plane 10 video on YouTube. I think it was Frooglesim. The guy made it very clear at the start of the video that it wasn't a comparison and was just to review X-plane 10 independantly. For the next 20 minutes he did nothing but say exactly how X-plane is so much better than FSX! What a wally! I switched it off after 20 minutes - load of junk.

I do find the GUI very clunky and unnecessarily awkward. So far I've yet to see a single impressive thing, compared to what's available for a fraction of the cost. It is also way too expensive, even compared to the likes of DCS World and its add-on modules.

Oh well. More cash down the spout. :dunno:

I've had X-Plane 10 for a while and tried to get into it several times but found it frustrating.

I've persevered more recently and am starting to get it into a reasonable shape. I agree that most of the default planes are poor and I struggled to find any freeware planes that were anything like the quality of what is available for FSX. I have recently found a B17 and a Fokker which are pretty good and worth flying.
You have to add a lot of stuff to X-Plane to make it reasonable, though most of it is freeware available from the community. It only comes with a dozen or so populated airports so nearly all have to be added. However this kind of scenery is quite decent quality.
I had to do a great deal of tweaking of my controls to get anything like reasonable response, it seems to be excessively sensitive in pitch and brake response and there is no option to reduce sensitivity of toe brakes so this has to be done externally ie CH Manager for me. Also the colours are not right for me sky, grass etc. With the photoscenery and add-on objects and airports and improved lights so you can see the PAPI lights it does start to look pretty good.
I got a surprise coming in to land at Blackpool recently when a train shot across in front of me. At night with lots of road lighting X-Plane does look good.
For me the planes have to handle right and I now have a few that are pretty good but there are many more good ones available on FSX. Its been much harder to find the right quality and setup than it is in FSX.
The one time I felt the flight model was better in X-Plane was flying in a Thunderstorm where the Beech twin I was in was being thrown around a great deal making it quite challenging.

In particular I use a Microsoft Sidewinder 2 Force Feedback stick with FS Force and a home built trim wheel with a Saitek throttle quadrant angled so the levers move mainly horizontally and I find these add enormously to the sense of immersion and feel for what the planes are doing. I fly a lot better with them than with a conventional stick and I'm hopeless with Yokes. Also because I'm left handed I've replaced the handle on my sidewinder with one from a CH Flightstick Pro to which I have added 2 extra multi-way switches to give me lots of hands on control (especially for the DCS A-10). This force feedback setup also works a bit better than the equivalent in X-Plane.

X-Plane still doesn't feel like a finished product and I suspect only will be via the add-ons that its community produce.

Cheers
