Recent Shots of VC10 ZA150 (Dunsfold)

Post by VC10 »

Thought you may like to see some recent photo's of ZA150. We had hoped to carry out a high speed taxi at Wings and Wheels but organisational issues prevent it happening. We did manage to taxi '150 the Tuesday prior to W&W and that went without hitch. Dunsfold management did see it happen and appear to be impressed, so hopefully we have won them over for next year. During the event we opened her up for viewing and there were a lot of positive comments.

Prior to W&W wh got new scrolls applied and a new union flag as the old one has faded to a white square

It is interesting to note Garland was 21 yo when he won his VC, Grey & Hawker were 25

Garland (pilot) & Grey (Nav) were fling a Fairey battle attacking some bridges heavily defended bridges in Belgium.

Hawker won his VC in 1915 after, using an a/c he adapted himself, he shot down 3 German aircraft. He died during a 30 minute dogfight with the Red Baron after running out of fuel in November 1916. He was the Baron's eleventh victim

I'm sure this has been asked/answered before, but why before retirement did all the VC-10s appear to come out of maintenance with the fuselage around the cockpit area a lighter shade of grey than the rest of the plane? *-)

Apparently it reduces interior temperatures in the Middle East

You also may be interested to learn we replaced the APU earlier this yea. It was delivered to Dunsfold with a known bad unit and we managed to get the last good APU out of BZN. Then by pooling resources with Gary Spoors at Brunty we had the all the tooling to carry out the change.

Grey, at 25, was actually vintage enough to be an "Observer" by brevet, IIRC. Of course their Battle had a 3 man crew; Garland & Grey, both Sgts received VCs, the AC gunner received nothing (again IIRC). I don't think there's another case like it.

Yes, the failure to make any award to the gunner, who doubtless played a part in fighting off the heavy fighter attacks mentioned in the citation, is a disgrace. Apart from anything else, it devalues the awards to the other two members of the crew
