I don't quite understand No.4's mind you. For the 16years I did.. working dress (lighter blue shirt and darker trousers) was No.8's!! Perhaps it's a minor faux pas by Auntie Beeb.. unless I read the article wrong
Saying it's the first new uniform since WW2 (in so many words).. is a little misleading though I see what they mean. For example.. the uniform I joined up with was not the same as the uniform I left with. Materials and design changed over that period as it has done in the 26-odd years since I left. The major difference here is that the shirt is now the same colour as the trollies.
I still have my No.8's btw
EDIT: Checking up on this.. No.8's (or AWD - Action Working Dress) was changed to No.4's in 2013 though looking at it.. No.4's are intrinsically No.8's. No.8's came into being in 1950. I know you're all happy to know this

In reality.. we had No.1's (Navy Blue dress uniform - gold badges).. No.2's (Navy Blue dress/duty/night uniform made of some woollen material that itched like hell - red badges).. working dress (the aforementioned No.8's) and tropical (blue shorts and sandals daytime and white shorts/white-front at night). We never (on the lower deck) had all the variations in-between. So.. in the UK, we had No.1's (ceremonial rig/gold badges).. No.2's (night rig) and No.8's (working rig during the day). We only got one initial issue of uniform and as this wore out (or we grew out of it) we had to buy replacements. This said.. we had KUA (kit Upkeep Allowance) which was enough (it was said) to buy one new No.1 suit per year. I know you guy's didn't get this (nor the Army) but you had uniform issued FOC throughout your term In 2013, No.8's were renamed No.4's (so it seems). We never had both
No 8s we renamed 4s well before 2013 as the change happened before I joined up in 2000. Not that some people didn't still refer to theme as 8s just to confuse us sprogs!
Rgr that. The earliest reference to them I found in my brief search yesterday was 2013. Needless to say, they were still No.8's in 1989 when I left and mine are still No.8's
Joe.. you didn't read the post above did you.. quote: No.2's (Navy Blue dress/duty/night uniform made of some woollen material that itched like hell - red badges).. unquote
