Spare cash to spend?

Post by Airspeed »

OK, I know that many of you don't like Abacus, :hide: but for those who do, they've bundled Flight Deck 6 and 2 other military collections, all for about US$45.....
They've even got DaveB's recently featured SU-33 for carrier ops.
I'm not saying that Dave's IS the Abacus version, but you can emulate him relatively cheaply.

Cheers, Mike.

Abacus ? :-O Make sure your caveat is fully emptored prior to purchase. I had one of their flight deck collections way back for FS98 and it was dreadful. I particularly remember the fuel gauge on the Grumman Panther, which resembled that found on a moped.

I'll give Abacus their due - Copilot flight planner was the first payware add-on I ever bought for MSFS, and it was excellent. It got me out of doing practice circuits , and into proper cross-country flying. Thus the joys of civilian flight simming were revealed. Aircraft Factory was good too, and despite it's polygon limitations, I did a passable model of a B-29. But after my experience with Flightdeck, I wouldn't touch any aircraft collections by them.

So, erm...thanks for the HU, MIke.

I should ban Mike for even suggesting someone part with money for an Abacus release but noting his current medical situation.. it's likely that worry and drugs have had an adverse effect on his otherwise stable demeanour. In this instance.. I'll issue a public warning

Many moons ago.. I bought FD3 to enjoy the thrill of carrier ops and soon found out that the important bit.. Arrcab.. could be used as a stand-alone. Shortly after.. I got rid of FD3 but kept Arrcab  With the release of FSX.. I bought FD4.. this being cross-platform. Not only was it more of the same, it was actually worse! The carrier kept disappearing (excessive draw calls) and my FR's went to single figures. Abacus were good enough to offer me my money back

Every time a sale comes.. I look longingly at the Gazelle (FSX deserves a good native model) but I just can't bring myself to take the plunge.. similar to the FCS Sunderland :(

The thing is Mike.. I hate to see folk waste good money. I do it enough myself to know what I'm talking about

I really don't know what FD6 has to offer the FSXer as most ships SP2/Acc onwards carry cats and traps and all carrier aircraft will be able to do both. Some may require a tail hook entry or even launch assist but all this will happen as a matter of course with Acc and/or Gold edition. I see no good reason to pay for something extra that the sim can already do.
As for the aircraft.. put simply, they're freeware quality and not good freeware quality at that.. these that will come with FD6.. unless that is, they've been given a pretty huge overhaul. I've no knowledge of the others so can't comment. It's possible to trip over some half decent stuff as Abacus are publishers and not everything is 'in house' but it's a risk. They could bundle a hundred aircraft for $40 and I still wouldn't touch it.. not even with your money ;)

I think it's too many years watching water go down the plug hole the wrong way that's done it to him. Poor Mike, I hope he gets better :(

I thought it was going to be the other Abacus, but it was the original one. Didn't even know they were still around. I had AF99 and built a Trislander and a BAC 3-11. That's a very long time ago now!
