Windows 10 and FS9

Post by dswanson »

Hi,

As with others I get bombarded with the free win10 upgrade - are there any known adverse impacts with win10 and FS9 ?

Hi Degsy..

One major issue I've read of is Win10's reluctance to run DX9 which of course, FS9 is built on. I'm not sure if it's a definite no-no but it's an issue that would have to be overcome. FSX is the same to some degree though as a workaround.. DX10 can be used.

Hi guys,

Just out of curiosity, I installed FS9 on a virgin Windows 10 (1115 build) tonight. Before I started I downloaded the directX June 2010 update from here

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download ... px?id=8109

Extracted the files and ran the DXSETUP.EXE program.

Next I installed FS9 on a non system drive.

Next I applied the 9.1 patch,

Then I installed the no CD crack,

Finally I set the FS9.exe file to run as administrator in compatibility settings.

Works like a charm with no issues :)

Hi,

I have FS9 on the D: drive of my PC, and expecting to update Win7 - win10 on the PC as it is. I seem to remember setting up on DX 10 when installing FS9 on the PC after I'd built it, some time ago now

Having seen the bit in the upgrade bumph that I can revert to win7 within a month of upgrading to win10, I may take a punt on that after backing everything up to another drive.....

Degsy, If you are going to update to W10 with FS9 already installed I would suggest you have the No CD crack loaded before you do. I also had FSX installed before changing from 8.1 to W10 & found I needed to delete the original fsx.cfg & let it reload a new copy as had the dreaded black screen. I still have a problem with the splash screen of FSX which occupies the bottom right of the screen so have to drag it back. This was on my cheep end laptop, so not too important for me. Still have 8.1 on my tower.
IIRC there was a report over at SoH on this back in June during beta test of W10, that covered this situation.
Good luck
Keith

Hi,

I took the plunge and took the Win10 upgrade. FS9 does run OK with a few snags:

- Have to run as administrator to keep Active Camera 2004 functions
- Can't make any setting changes when in full-screen mode, e.g. change plane - as get a black screen and need to use esc key to clear it. Must close full screen, reset the change, then set full screen up again to continue
- GPS screen shimmers

I'll have a few more trips to test and acclimatise but may roll back to Win7....

:) Hi Degsy,

No problems changing aircraft etc here in full screen mode. Is this a fresh install of fs9? You can also change the properties on the exe file so that it always runs in compatibly mode, which will mean you don't have to right click and run as administrator.

Hi,

Reply to Ben's question, not a fresh install - I couldn't contemplate that with all the add-ons over the years

After persevering with a few flights I've now restored back to Win 7 and all is well with the world :welldone:

The roll back was easy and complete - no additional fiddles required
