I have seen debates comparing the DC-8 to the 707 around the web with some pointing to the fact that there are many DC-8's still operating around the world while the 707 is few and far between, but the answer to that debate is in your second pic. Douglas provided engine upgrade kits while boeing, wanting airlines to buy new 757's and 767's, did not.
But boeing did provide engine upgrade kits to the USAF for their KC-135's, which derived from the same prototype as the 707, and there are still over 400 in service.
