Small gimmick, big effect....
Hi all, now don't get aroused.....it's only about Flight Sim....
Well mostly for those of us, that either fly longhauls at night, or fly at night in clear sky conditions, or above cloud ceiling....anyway to the point.
While I fly my longhauls, there's not much to look at in the middle of the night somewhere over the pacific ocean, other than David's magnificent panel, but even that can bee a bit boring after 3 or 4 hours (sorry David). Looking out of the window in FS's default night doesn't give you much more pleasure.... then I stumbled over this little fellow:
Real Stars
Which actually places all visible stars on the night-sky, you can actually navigate by then with this small utility...no good to show a screenshot, as the wont be noticeable in a such, but try it and you won't be disappointed. If you know the constellations, you can find them as well, no impact on anything other than pleasure of night flight.
Enjoy

I run FS9.1 and have used this little file for ages now.....it's merely a text file, and you can compare the contains with each other and see that the formats are alike.
Such a small file isn't likely to change, even over several editions of FS....My best guess is that it's the same stars.dat that shipped with FS9, that is used in FSX....(I don't have FSX either.....yet)

Are the stars in my eyes?
This may be the same file by the same author which is not on Avsim.com but may be on 'all nodes busy.'
rlstar04.zip by Norbert Pachner supposedly put together for FS2004. This is titled v1.1.

From CNET you can get it, as long as AllNodes IS busy...:
C|NET
BUT...the containing stars.dat is exactly the same (I did a binary file compare, and the ARE the same)........so use any of them you like...no difference there....

That's a nice little upgrade, Dan. Thanks for that. It certainly makes the night sky look as it should. I couldn't vouch for the accuracy of the galaxies but I'll take your word for it. I expect you're lucky enough to see it like that more often than we do in the UK
With the other post about the Aurora, I felt it was time to do a bit of night flying so I've taken G-ARVB up to Dan's part of the world. I'm flying from Oslo due North to see what happens
If you're outside your igloo milking the reindeer, give me a wave, Dan
