Scenery issue at Teeside?

Post by ejoiner »

Gents, apologies if this is the wrong place to post this. Moderators please move to the correct forum if it isnt placed well.

I have a flight tonight from Stansted headed to iceland which overflies Teeside EGNV. In observing the outside scenery I see that the oil tanks etc in FS9 are misplaced into the adjacent water. I've had FS9 for about a billion years now so this could easily be a 3rd party scenery issue, but anybody know how to put the tanks back on dry land? I post this here because Im flying in a BOAC DC-7C...which would qualify as CNB.

Any advice would be appreciated!

kind regards

It looks as though you may have the addon UK Oil Refineries installed. I think this was intended for the FS9 Horizon VFR scenery but it looks as though you may be using it with the default scenery from Microsoft. If that is the case the coast and rivers are quite different. Hope this helps.

That was my first thought too Steve and the only logical one I can come up with ;)

A list of the refineries from the UK REFINERIES readme file:

"North Eastern England
---------------------
P.I.P.
Wilton
Billingham
Seals Sands
All visible, from the circuit, at Teesside Airport."

Might also be in UK FUEL STORAGE DEPOTS addon which does have some depots around Tees.

Dave and Steve are correct, these addons were originally designed by Gerry Winskill to go with some other third party scenery (I think it might be Visual Flights scenery) Anyway much of Gerry's scenery is available from http://www.cixvfrclub.org.uk/downloads/5d_scenery.php

I have some of Gerry's scenery installed and have the ssame problem, but have decided just to live with it. There is not much that can be done to move the oil tanks to land, short of decompiling the .bgl files and changing the locations and recompiling them. That is something I thought I might try some day, but can't really be bothered doing it.

Hope this helps a bit.

Just a quick thought or 2: could you remove just the offending bmp files which would remove the misplaced tanks? or use Afcad to drag the scenery to the right place? I've just moved a WW2 airfield to a new location using Afcad2. My added Instant Scenery items didn't follow but that's another problem!!!

Just a couple of shots for comparison. I have all of Gerry Winskill's addons installed, and am running FSX with GenX scenery.

Gerry did align his work for VFR Scenery in FS9, but it also works well in FSX.

On the port side is Durham/Tees airport.

Dennis.

Removing just the .bmp files will leave untextured grey shells. You will have to identify the correct .bgl file. I would not remove any texture files since they meay be used by other locations where the storage tanks are properly on land. There arn't many .bgl files and P.I.P.,Wilton, Billingham and Seals Sands are likely candidates in the UK REFINERIES scenery folder. In the UK FUEL STORAGE DEPOTS scenery folder if you have it, try TEES.bgl. I can't really be more specific but maybe someone from that area of the UK familair with the fuel depots can be. Trial and error is the only way I know how to do this.

You could also try using an exclude tool to remove just the objects in the water. I often use ExcBuider V2 by Paavo Pihelgas. It should be at Avsim along with a good tutorial by David Marshall. Come to think of it, this may be the easiest way to clean up the scenery - you will be minus those tanks that were in the water, but hey - you can't have everything.

AFCAD will not work to move anything other than airport runways, taxiways ramps, parking spaces etc.

You have Instant Scenery but have you downloaded the update? There is a handy visual exclude tool included. By loading the relevant bgl in Instant Scenery it may be possible to exclude the tanks OR even move them to the correct position.
