Ahhh...Arthur Treachers. Those rascals got me hooked (no pun intended ) on having malt vinegar with my Fish n' Chips. Used to drive the former Mrs. FlyTexas crazy from the smell of the malt vinegar when we'd have Fish n' Chips at home. She always insisted that I sit at the far end of the table any time we had Fish 'n Chips.

In this part of the UK, it's "fish, chips and mushy peas" - didn't know such things existed until I moved here.

The best chips I have ever had are from the 'Northern Fish Bar' in Elgin. I used to go there as a child when we used to holiday in Lossiemouth. I last went about 4 years ago. The chips were just as I remembered them. The decor inside had not changed either.

Cannot comment about the fish as I have never been keen on battered fish. Scotch Pies are good though.

Wasn't it Lard that made the best chips?

That's what I thought - none of this vegetable oil stuff.
But my days of any deep fried food stopped a long time ago when SWMBO had her gall bladder removed because of gall stones. The absence of a gall bladder results in intolerance to fatty foods. But probably does me good as well ;)

For NigelB

There is a very good new restaurant in Ashburn on Waxpool Rd called Fords Fish Shack.

http://fordsfishshack.com/

Good Fish N' Chips there.

Cheers,
Robin
