Just had a little flight with Peter Watkins' latest repaint - the Classic Air Force's Chipmunk APLO. Matt Wynn kindly did a repaint of this for Rick's version, so now we have two on the in-house simulator!

What with our new scenery and the generosity of people here - Rick, Dave Garwood and Rob Richardson, we hope that what has been created with the thanks of local companies, Saitek and Chillblast, is something that is educational, but fun at the same time. We want people to go away having learnt something about aviation and treating the software not as a game, but as a learning tool to further their interest. What is interesting is that the majority of our virtual pilots, have never seen Horizon scenery or know of FSX or TrackIR. But then you get the kids that know it all and fly it from the outside view as per 'Afterburner'. This we try to make them not do, as then the whole experience is a complete waste of time for them and ourselves.

The Carrier has been supplied by those nice people at FlyingStations and represents HMS Illustrious. In 1946, an Auster Autocrat of Aeroplane Magazine was the first civilian aircraft to land on a Royal Navy Carrier and so we have Dave's painted up as G-AERO (again by Matt Wynn) and this sits two miles off Watergate Bay. As a challenge we have a short scenario where the 'pilot' attempts to land the Auster on the deck. Only three people have managed it so far. Something a little different, but then historic and hopefully accurate.

Best wishes,

Martin

The little green car is a Toyota Wii (half between a Micra and a 2CV) and owned by a friend of mine who was initially part of the simulator project team. Model expertly made by Dave Molyneaux!

I think one of the first things I did with Dave's J1 when we got the beta was to land it on a carrier. Come to think of it.. most things I have have landed on a carrier at some point  You can take a sailor out of the navy but you can never take the navy out of the sailor e t c, e t c  Right.. off to find APLO now

The set of four C.O.A.T Hamble Chipmunks is now available at FlightSim.com.
Dave, was WP776 silver or grey? The pics I have are not very clear on this. Also in the pics, one wing is painted with the red going past the roundel and the other with only the aileron red going past the roundel. The code '817' is only painted on the port side engine cowling! Weird.

cheers, Peter

Hi Peter :hello:

As it happens.. I saw you up and dived over to Allnodes..

I'll have a looksee at WP776 again :cpu:

EDIT: I see what you mean about that scheme Peter  My guess is that some remedial work has been carried out necessitating a new roundel and the white outer you see is the application sheet for it (probably a vinyl) :) As far as fuse colour.. my best guess would be grey rather than silver (similar to the Sea Devon). A nice link here showing a selection of Chipmouse shots (you probably have it already) http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthre ... pmunk-Pics .. WP809 looks as WP776 should be (minus racing numbers) :)

Plenty of pics in that link of G-ARGG/Irish Air Corps 169 if you want to go 'foreign' as well, Peter! I think he got about every view you could possibly want

Hi Myles. Yes I saw the pics of the Irish painted Chipmunks. I personally prefer the 3 colour Celtic Boss markings rather than just the boring Green/Orange version. Also both Chippy's are ex-RAF aircraft and never served with the Irish Air Corps. I can perhaps understand painting one in those colours, but two? Ridiculous!
I have just uploaded to FlightSim.com G-ANWB C.A.F.U. which I did for Rick's version and also a Irish Air Corps version with the 3 colour Celtic Boss and Dayglo fin, tailplane and wingtips!

cheers, Peter

Many thanks, Peter! Off to get them now. BTW, I also preferred the version you did. I have the Airfix Chippy painted up like that, albeit with a silver nose and dayglo spinner, mainly because the illustration wasn't easy to decipher!

Best,
Myles
