A little Christmas photo quiz...

Post by Paul K »

I think this is just a great photo, but what ship is it, what aircraft, and where was the picture taken ?

I know the name of the ship, but that's it. ;)

It is a great photo Paul! The ship - I'm pretty sure - is the ill-fated HMS Courageous (after she was converted from a cruiser). The aeroplanes are a bit more tricky though. I reckon the single-bay jobs up front are Blackburn Baffins or something of that Ilk. As for the floatplane being dangled over the side... I'll go for a Fairey III. Er - I'll get back to you on the 'where' once I've checked out those shrubs in the background... (definitely inter-war though.)

Cheers,
Nick

I'm tempted to say HMS Furious rather than courageous. :worried:

Those small trees along the shoreline look very much like trees you'd find in Boka Kotorska, Yugoslavia. :wasntme: ;)

Maybe, but it hasn't looked like that since 1929 :-#

It's not a 'bird', it's an aeroplane or an aircraft

Hi

The aircraft on the bow is a Flycatcher and the one on the crane is probably a Fairey IIIF. The ship is Hermes or possibly Eagle in the Med possibly in Argostoli Bay in Kefalonia which was a fleet anchorage.

Happy New Year.

Lots of answers here, both correct and otherwise ( depending on whether I've got the correct info, of course ). I now know the location, by the way - but again, depending on whether my info is correct. Thrilling stuff, eh ?

I've been in Argostoli many times, and those surrounding hills look to be too high for it to be there.

:dunno:

I'm surprised you didn't date the shot by the size of the trees Brian. You knew, of course, it was 1929 :cpu:
