It is a great photo Paul! The ship - I'm pretty sure - is the ill-fated HMS Courageous (after she was converted from a cruiser). The aeroplanes are a bit more tricky though. I reckon the single-bay jobs up front are Blackburn Baffins or something of that Ilk. As for the floatplane being dangled over the side... I'll go for a Fairey III. Er - I'll get back to you on the 'where' once I've checked out those shrubs in the background... (definitely inter-war though.)
The aircraft on the bow is a Flycatcher and the one on the crane is probably a Fairey IIIF. The ship is Hermes or possibly Eagle in the Med possibly in Argostoli Bay in Kefalonia which was a fleet anchorage.
Lots of answers here, both correct and otherwise ( depending on whether I've got the correct info, of course ). I now know the location, by the way - but again, depending on whether my info is correct. Thrilling stuff, eh ?
