thanks for the tips cbris. here you go garry , been working at this all day and lots more to do. the white strip was a pain to match up on the front. alas i got there in the end.
your note on the conversion was just the switch in the grey matter that put things together and now i feel that i can now start to get somewhere with this new side to fs. so here my real repaint effort.
as i say lots more to do yet.

Likewise black is 0 0 0 but that is too stark
Doesn't 0 0 0 end up blanking out the view of whatever you are texturing?
That's how Rick got rid of the Earth that rolled out of the Beverley's cargo bay when the doors were opened. I've used it to remove the Japanese geisha girl 'crew' from Hama's BMW 750 as well.
And it's the same 'colour' used to make the windscreen see-through on 2D panel .BMPs.
But I understand where you are coming from Kit. With some models it is possible to 'remove' unwanted parts by adding pure black (0,0,0) to the relevant part of the alpha layer - it was the method I tried to use when Itosan released his Swift with the erroneous Fireflash missiles, but I was thwarted as some of the parts were actually untextured!!
Was trying to do this at the weekend and couldn't work out how you guys got the high definition. Would have helped if I had the latest dxt.bmp, I didn't have the no MIPs option STUPID
It used to be on the Edinburgh-Norwich/Amsterdam almost permanently for a couple of years when I started high school  It sat all day at Turnhouse on a Sunday for a 1705 dep to Amsterdam.
