Wow! Thanks for posting that, Gary. Just curious about G-APFC at Atlantic City, NJ. I don't think I would be too comfortable flying in that in the state pictured. Any idea what was going on?

That was probably like many many ex airline 707's part stripped for the Joint Stars project. They took the fins and other bits.

I think some of the fins may have been fitted to C-135, whatever, the US military swallowed up a lot of civil 707s.

Some aircraft were dismantled for structural testing and that looks like it might be the case there *-) :dunno:

I know you've got a soft spot for the RR 136s, Ben, but sadly they're the least favourite of the aircraft I've flown on. Compared to the PW engined 336s they seemed noisy, underpowered and struggled to get into the air. The 336s were smoother, quieter and performed much more comfortably. But that's just an impression from inside, the facts may well be different from my memory - they usually are!

Great collection of photos, Garry. Thanks for those. I may have been in one of them. You never know!

Ian :)

 Ah yes! proper aircraft! Sorry, Ben - I didn't read it properly!

I remember now that it's Eddie who has a soft spot for the RR 707s :$

I wondered if he meant the 'almost invisible' Alidair Viscount in the background of one shot

My recollections of the PW powered 707 operated by BOAC were not favourable ones, compared with the Conway powered 420 variant ( I do not know what the reference to 136 is at all in connection with Conways) . They always gave me earache in the descent, and indeed IIRC as soon as power was reduced you could see the cabin altitude climb .

I think that was a typo and Ian meant 436. *-)

The BOAC Conway variants were BOAC ordered 436 and a couple of 465's that had been ordered by Cunard Eagle

There was no 136 :)
